My thought on this is it is about PT and this is just a PC announcement. Now to defend Steere, he committed prior Walker, Funderburke, and SJK committing. Steere is a 5 player in this system and that is a lot of bodies for one spot. So I can understand his thought process. And why wait until later to decide? By announcing now, he can transfer in December and be able to play next year. Its also hard for me to criticize transfers when the majority of our team is made up of transfers.

Boiler plate public press announcement, and it might be entirely true and accurate. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me what the reasons are. It's a free country and people can do as they wish. But, the concept of loyalty is really a weak motivation for many. For reasons good or bad, personally, I just couldn't imagine signing an LOI and then asking for a transfer before the first regular season game is even played! Now, maybe that sense of duty to others can be a bad thing. I don't think it is, but other might. That's the beautiful thing about freedom. Folks get to live their lives as they wish, not as others wish. It likely isn't a case of being too far from home, as he hails from High Point, NC. Ken

Honestly, the media fueled voyeurism is seedy. Actual violations of law can be fairly and impartially investigated and prosecuted as indicated by the evidence. Too many people in our society today want to turn the media into the courtroom or the investigative office, and that's where the evil really lies. Also, within the academia industry, there is a hyper-inflated sense of PC doctrine taken hold, that is also fueling a vengeance mentality. Mere accusation is enough now to get people fired and publicly ridiculed, and there is something very sinister in all that. The media in America has become a force for evil and harm. The media isn't fit to be a proper replacement for a courtroom, nor for law enforcement investigation. The media stokes public emotions simply to gin up subscriptions and ratings -- money! There used to be a mantra that said, "Better that a hundred guilty men go free than for one innocent man go to prison." Today, I seriously wonder how many people reject that value and have replaced it with a different view of destroying thousands in the hope that in the effort some great social crusade is realized. That's along the lines of another mantra, "Kill 'em all -- let God sort 'em out!" I know which value is more harmonious to a free and fair society. Sadly, I no longer think I'm in the majority on that! Ken

I will also like to add this, Cary and Emeka both dropped catchable balls in the endzone. Myers dropped one on the one yard line that he possibly could have turned and got the score. You make two of those 3 plays, we win this game. You make one of those 3, WF only ties us with that last score instead of winning. A lot of this is on the coaching staff, and I am not trying to absolve them of the blame, but it also falls on the players as well. We had a bad game, we need to learn from it and move on.

After meeting with Keatts, Steere announced he is transferring from State. Per Steere: My decision to transfer has nothing to do with playing time or any animosity towards Coach Keatts, the staff, or my teammates. My choice is strictly personal and I appreciate everything State has done for me.

I was hesitant to click on this thread and I avoided the website all weekend knowing the reactions. Here is my thoughts on this: 1. It was a bad loss, no two ways around it. 2. Almost all schools have a WTF loss every single year save the few elite teams. We are not special in that regard. Kentucky just lost to a bad Tenn team for example. 3. Getting to 8 to 9 wins per year is a step up for us. TOB coached 6 years, two seasons with 8 wins or better and that was with two NFL QB's. Chuck coached 7 years, we had two seasons with 8 wins or better. And that was with an all time great QB. Mike O'Cain had 1 season with 8 wins or better in 7 years. You have to go all the way back to Sheridan who had 3 years of 8 wins or better out of 7 years. 4. The crap showing from the fans on Thursday night was bad. I was embarrassed as a fan. We LOVE to talk about how great a fan base we are, but we sure did not show it on a nationally televised game on a Thursday night. You think the way CF usually rocks in a game like this would not have had an effect on the players, for both teams?

The thing to remember, that early on the FBI insulated that Early was involved. However, of all the coaches that were arrested, Early was not one. Also to add, during the actual trial, no evidence was put forth that Early was involved. In fact, I believe the bag man said he paid Smith's father directly. No mention of Early at all. Hopefully, I believe we will have to vacate the wins from the DSJ season, and maybe be given the "probation" tag but that is all I expect. We have been up front and cooperative with the NCAA since this has come out. Also the fact that the coaching staff that DSJ played for is gone helps us.

Steere is not leaving, yet anyway. He has been given time to think (thus why he did not dress this past game) and is supposed to meet with Keatts today. All I can say is that Keatts and staff were as caught off guard as anyone with this. Steere had shown no signs of having any issues/ animosity/ etc. So we will see what the outcome of todays meeting is.

I'm not sure that's entirely correct. I think even if we did not know, playing an ineligible athlete would at least cause us to vacate wins and titles. Of course, the season that Smith played ended up the bitter swan song for Gottfried, and given what we are learning, that end isn't merely poetic justice, but in a real sense a logical fallout from abandoning so many good principles just to get one player for one season. Again, I agree with your points regarding Early. Why would he be involved? But, the principles in the federal case are the ones who say he was. One reason would be that our coaching staff was working with our apparel company (Adidas) to gain control of that money to entice Smith to sign his LOI. I admit that I'm speculating, but we do know that there was a point in the recruiting of Smith that he became squishy on signing with NC State. Then, everything seemed to regain solidity. What you are also entirely correct about is that if the reports of Early's involvement are true, then the sanctions against NC State become much more severe, and as is so often the case, the athletes and coaches who are punished are the ones who had nothing at all to do with the crime! Perhaps the lesson here is the evils of selling your soul to the devil. Ken

And I am not saying with my above post that it is ok as far as what is happening between shoe companies and AAU programs. That is why there is an FBI investigation. I am saying that there is nothing in this deal that could hurt us as far as Smith's family receiving money from Adidas through his AAU participation unless someone employed by NC State or a booster of NC State was directly involved. The shoe companies are more concerned about getting their return on their investments when the player is drafted by the NBA. Not where they play in college. There is no reason for Early to get his greasy hands in this transaction unless the money was coming from NC State or a booster.

Strong points. The AAU circuit is the real culpable agent in all this, along with the apparel and agent money also. The AAU has turned into a semi-pro league for teenagers. I don't think that's the sort of stuff our children should be involved in. These sort of summer leagues have become a corrupt influence peddling operation. State legislation that would require AAU coaches to be non-paid volunteers would eliminate the money racket, and stiff felony sentences for taking money payments would do the trick. The irony of this is that I was a member of the AAU swimming sport in North Carolina, and my coach was the same Brooks Teal who eventually became the head swimming and diving coach at NC State. We weren't chased by agents and apparel companies and the thing is that AAU stands for Amateur Athletic Union. There is noting whatsoever amateur about coaches getting huge wads of money! Ken

The question for me is not whether or why Dennis Smith's father was paid. He was a AAU coach who's team was sponsored by Adidas. Of course he was. My question is why in the HELL would Orlando Early be involved in distributing that money??? Shoe company sponsors funnel millions through AAU programs every year and the families of athletes are paid like it or not. Marvin Bagley's family bought them selves out of bankruptcy using such funds. Duke was in no way involved in that wink wink. There is no reason for Early to be involved in such transaction because it happens anyway and if he was he should go to jail. I mean think about it. Early says "Dennis, I am going to personally hand your Dad the 40k cash from Adidas that your Dad would get anyway if you play for NC State. Stupid!!!! And the NCAA will hammer us if Early's hands was involved in distributing that filthy cash. They do not have a history of forgiving that sort of thing regardless how the schools athletic department cooperates and fires the whole staff. Stupid!!!

Matt, Our society is at a moral crises. Simply put, there is a widespread erosion of moral character in the United States as we have raised an entire generation of me-first youth, who honestly don't believe they have any duty to anyone else. I don't know how a republic can survive that sort of development. If this story is true, then it's just one more sign post warning us that this is the path of self-destruction we are already on. Just keeping the focus on youth and college basketball, we have adults using money to entice children to violate laws and all basic ethics. It is adults corrupting youth just on the odd chance some will emerge as coveted professional players, needing the services of agents, and able to peddle apparel. Expanding it beyond just basketball, and we have thugs assembling outside peoples' homes chanting threats and trying to bust down doors, all because they cannot tolerate the most basic exercises of our Constitutional liberties!

Giving who we loss to in the draft and graduation last season and knowing BC and Cuse would be better in the Atlantic and Wake was projected to have a good team I thought 9-3 or 8-4 would be a good season at the beginning of the year. Then we started out 5-0 and expectations went up. Clemson was disappointing as far as how we played. Cuse loss was disappointing as well but we loss to a good National ranked team. Last night to me was one of the worse losses if not the worse since Doeren has been here. Any loss going forward will be equally bad considering who we play. We are not as good as a lot of people thought before Clemson exposed who we really are. I have no problem with that as long as we are building and moving in the right direction. We are as far as recruiting. I just feel last night was a huge step back. We played horribly and we were out coached. Any loss going forward as far as the regular season will be a sign of something bad wrong with this team and the direction of the program because we are playing 3 very bad teams. Respond well and take care of business the next 3 games and we have something positive to build on. Regardless there is absolutely no excuse for what happened last night.

Expectations are to be embraced, but they also have to come with an equal measure of accountability. The saddest part of last night was listening to the ESPN commentators keep saying how the team wasn't playing like they were taking Wake Forest seriously, and me watching the play on the field and being forced to agree. This season, as far as I am concerned, is a lost cause now. Like many people, for me, a seven or eight win season and getting a mid-level bowl matchup isn't what this team should have striven for. My appetite for future NC State football this season is simply an empty hole, carved out by a dull knife with jagged edges. Just a few years ago, Doeren was literally coaching for his job. Then, his team rebounded. A lot of forgiveness was shown his way. He turned down Tennessee (rightly) and now a wealthy Kansas booster has made a very public money play for him. Honestly, it wouldn't bother me either way. If he wants the money, then chase it with my compliments. The legacy of the 2018 NC State Wolfpack football team is already chiseled in stone: "Highly talented and experienced team -- couldn't handle the limelight and wilted under pressure!" And by team, that includes the coaching staff every bit as much as the players.

Nobody was ready to play this game. The O-line I have been bragging on all season got manhandled last night. In fact Wake dominated both sides of the LOS. We were only able to rush for 47 yards while giving up 138 on the ground. All the dropped passes combined with mental mistakes on both sides of the ball and our weak secondary that gets exposed every game and you get the results we got last night. I said after the Cuse game that there is no one on the schedule left we should not beat soundly. Play the next 3 games like we did last night and there is not a team left that cannot beat us. Louisville, UNC, and ECU are all terrible but have athletes that can make us pay if we come into the game with our heads up our as& like last night. There is not gonna be a lot of support if we limp into a bowl game at 6-6, 7-5, or even 8-4 with a loss to the holes or ECU. Finishing the regular season 9-3 is the minimal expectation for this team with the 3 teams we have left to play. I would feel different about an 8-4 team if we had 2 losses to Nationally ranked BC and UVA but no excuse to lose to Wake and certainly not Lville, holes, or the pirates.

Your expectations are entirely reasonable, and this season was the year that should have happened in football. We had the team. There's really only one word to describe this tonight, and it's harsh, but I don't care any longer -- the rebuke is fairly earned. This team choked on a national stage, and the stain of it won't wear away this year, nor for soon thereafter. I will add this one powerful fact to your narrative, Gene, we have had multiple nationally elite teams over the last several seasons, and each year this site has fully documented those achievements. Now, it's your right not to care about these teams, but they do exist. Swimming and wrestling have been nationally elite programs for several years now. Others like track and cross country have been strong year after year. Rifle has been elite for the last decade plus. Ken

Wake relies heavily on their ability to run the ball behind Carney and Colburn. Their last win they had almost 400 yards on the ground against Louisville. Nobody runs the ball on NC State. We are ranked 7th in the nation stopping the run allowing only 91 yards a game. Clemson who is ranked 7th in the nation in rushing offense could not get over 100 yards rushing on us (yea I know Lawrence passed for almost half a thousand on us that game). I predict Pack wins 35-7 tonight.
