Ken, Last night was the 2nd night of the challenge. The conferences split the 1rst night 3-3 so the ACC lost this year 7-5. The ACC holds a 15-6 advantage over the 21 years of the challenge.

I'm positive we have to play all 40 minutes like we did in the 2nd half if we want to make the NCAA. 2nd half was good ball. 1st half was plain awful. Hellams had a fantastic game.

This year's ACC-Big 10 Challenge has kicked off and the initial wave went very poorly for the ACC. The results of day one were: NC State 69 Wisconsin 54 Maryland 72 Notre Dame 51 Purdue 69 Virginia 40 Ohio State 74 UNC 49 (OK, that's not such bad news!)

We did play much better 2nd half. Fairly comfortable win. I stand by my prior analysis. 20 good minutes isn't going to get the job done. And Wisconsin isnt good at all this year. This is not going to be held up as a "good win" on Selection Sunday.

We lead at halftime only because a half court prayer from Markell goes in. We are not good. No. We aren't. We look disorganized and undisciplined. We look like 5 guys playing pickup street ball. Maybe we'll get our head out of our ass and blister them 2nd half. We're still in huge trouble come January. 20 minutes of solid ball isn't going to beat UNC, Duke, UVA, or even Clemson.

The only issue I took with your post was recruiting, which is what I specifically responded too. There is a perception that recruiting has "fallen off" this year. It has not. NC State is ranked #44 in the Nation this year (per 247), last years class that everyone thought was so great was ranked #31 (per 247). And there are still some recruits we are going to likely land before the 18th that will bump us up some. If there is one thing this staff should not be questioned on is recruiting. Not with the number of NFL players that have been produced. This staff can eye talent and recruit it to fill needs. And most of those NFL guys were under the radar guys. The 2014 recruiting for State was ranked #7 in the ACC and #34 Nationally, it produced: Kentavious Street Germaine Pratt

The manner by which Ole Miss lost to Miss State in the Egg Bowl was about as clear a sign of coaching staff dysfunction as there is. For those who may not know the situation, Ole Miss scored a would be tying touchdown late in the game, but the player who scored crawled on his fours and lifted his leg like a dog pissing on a tree! He was very rightly flagged and the extra point was moved back 15 yards and missed! Hence, the final 21-20 score! If that sort of extremely poor behavior is indicative of those players threatening to revolt, then the AD should simply tell the young men they are free to leave and go wherever they desire. And while we're on the subject, let's just utter it plain. There is an increasing lack of inhibition among young people today that seems to imbue many of them with an overdose of self-confidence, that they know better than everyone else and should dictate the terms of their environment. To paraphrase Mike Ditka, "Players play, coaches coach, and AD's AD!" There are a great number of young people in American society today who need a sharp lesson delivered that they don't run society, but are merely a part of it! Ken

He did a heck of a job as OC at Clemson. Obviously not nearly as prolific as a head coach though.

That doesn't surprise me. In fact, I'd be disappointed if that were not happening. But, Huxtable would be one big change that I think is necessary. Other changes I don't get to see to know the details, but in the aggregate, we have to improve staff effectiveness in selling recruits on NC State. We've got way too much meat on the reality bone to come in second to any other program inside North Carolina. If a player wants to be be made NFL ready, there isn't a university in North Carolina with better pedigree than NC State, and it's not even a close contest. Ken

What I wrote leading off this thread was analytical, not emotional. Serious things were broke this season and need serious fixing, and while I agree with the comments Doeren made in the locker room to the team, most importantly of all I think it clearly shows that he knows these things were seriously broken. Doeren's senior class achieved some great results, but they are leaving on a sour note, and they know this also. The rising upperclassmen have a leadership challenge and opportunity laid before them. Hand-in-hand with the coaching staff for next season, they have to motivate everyone to prepare more effectively than was done in the 2019 preseason. As Doeren well said, "get back to being tough!" UNC's hype is their hype, just as worthless as their lies in trying to escape accountability for sacrificing their academic reputation as a university, simply to keep a handful of athletes eligible through a system designed by legal scholars to pass NCAA muster, regardless of moral decay. As I wrote, we at NC State focus on reality. UNC can keep focusing on hype and subterfuge. All that just gives us the avenue to fix what is broken with our program and move on to renewing our recent dominance over them on the gridiron. But, that avenue will remain an untrodden path until we honestly address what is broke and fix it! My confidence with Doeren is that he's an honest broker and he knows what is broken. The only question is can he assemble the optimal coaching staff next season to motivate the players to fix the problems? In that question, I remain optimistic. Frankly, I think if he could read my comments, he might raise his eyebrows and acknowledge the truth of it, and accept the challenge for what it truly is. Ken

There hasn't been an athlete in the history of sports who buys in to negative feedback over his performance. I wish Matt McKay all the best, but if he thinks there is a Division ! program out there who would start him as QB in a pro set offense, then he's sadly mistaken. He had most of the quality reps throughout spring training and yet, during every game he started, he couldn't hit a receiver on a deep route in stride to save his life. Ken

Hux is gone and as Stephen said, there is a great chance that Gibson moves into the DC roll. Not sure about offense yet. I believe that DD is still evaluating that situation and a decision will come midweek or end of the week. We also need to remember that position coaches are primarily responsible for player development. So the new DC likely will have a say who stays and goes on the defensive side of the ball.

If it were me, here is what I would do. Relieve Hux and Gibson of their duties. Bring in Charlie Strong or Steve Addazio since they are both out of a job as of this weekend. We also need to look for a new secondary coach. Get rid of Henry and/or Barlow as well. Our secondary has always been poor under these guys. Offensively, McDonald should be replaced. I am not sure what to do with Dez. Our running game overall has been positive I believe, which is his focus. So do you promote Roper to Co-OC or just take the lump of losing both Dez and McDonald and start over offensively.

OK, where to start... #1 this was always a filler recruiting class. I have said that a ton, I said that from the day that Mack was hired and to be cautious of the hype train that was coming. #2 Our record against WF, ECU, Duke and UNC? We have won 2 straight against ECU. Haven't played Duke in like 7 years, until Saturday had won 3 straight over the Heels and won 9 of 12, still have won 9 of 13 and 4 of 6. WF is the only program in state that has had DD's number. And frankly that go back a lot longer than DD. And DD is like 3-4 vs. WF so its not like WF is dominating the series. #3 Recruiting. I got news for you UNC almost always has a strong "paper" class. Always. In 2019 UNC was 6th in the ACC, the Pack 6th, In 2018 UNC was 4th and State 6th, 2017 UNC 5th and State 10th, 2016 UNC was 5th and State was 9th, in 2015 UNC was 4th, State was 6th. I went all the way back to 2010, Not one of the Pack's recruiting was higher than UNC's (Per 247 sports). Yet it has not mattered on the field for the most part. Why? You can buy recruiting rankings for your players to drive hype. UNC does this a lot. Just pay attention every kid that commits to UNC almost always gets a bump in rankings. #4 The Mack Brown hype train. I have been warning everyone about this, yet I see State fans falling for this hook, line, and sinker. UNC is going to drive they hype train. And they have built in help from the local media. Mack is a great salesman (dont forget I was recruited by Mack so I know first hand). Dave will have to adjust to Mack. And frankly, Mack will win more than his fair share of players in NC. Just a fact. DD will have to get creative and also look outside the state of NC.

Dave Doeren will return next season. There is zero question about that. But, he's gone from being the trendy darling in coaching recruiting circles to now standing at a crossroads in his career. The principle argument against an honest assessment of the situation is that rival programs will use and abuse the unrest to their advantage. Lies in recruiting happen every year and facts not in evidence are just made up. Young people who listen to lies will taste a bitter brew. There's nothing more that needs to be said about that. For those of us who choose to live in the world of reality with an independent mind, there are many realities that we need to soberly address. The first reality is that recruiting is the life blood of college sports. There is no draft that gives struggling teams some chance to recover. In college sports, there are no safety nets. A program can fall quick and descend very deep. In one season, the situation for NC State football has reversed. Mack Brown has entirely changed the recruiting picture. The gate that Dave Doeren built over five years has been torn down in a few months. Mack Brown has recruited the nation's 17th best class for next season, third best in the ACC, and hauled in nearly all of the top recruits from the state of North Carolina. Dave Doeren has achieved far less, the nation's 45th best class, and a middling eighth ranking within the ACC. Worse, those results were amassed long before the ultimate humiliation of Saturday night's nationally televised destruction, with a 28-point third quarter debacle, enroute to a 41-10 drubbing at Carter-Finley stadium. This was a rivalry result as bad as any in the over 100 year history of the series. The brutal truth is that a 68 year old coach, who was fired at Texas, and was an ESPN commentator, has been hired back for his second stint at UNC and before his first season was even begun, completely changed the trends in Chapel Hill's favor. Sugar coating that reality is simply pandering to lies, and nothing is achieved by such an ostrich approach. That reversal wasn't achieved through lies in recruiting circles, but instead through outworking the NC State coaching staff. Back-to-back nine win seasons, five straight bowl games, a record five QB's on NFL active rosters, and a very impressive list of other NFL players, should have been more than a sufficient foundation to avoid such an immediate reversal of recruiting trends. Add in the huge international black eye of cheating and naked evisceration of academic standards, and UNC had a lot to overcome. A geriatric coach, taken off the ESPN roster, should not have been able to achieve such a complete reversal of fortune so quickly, regardless of him winning a single national title at Texas, and then falling spectacularly and getting fired by one of the nation's most impatient alumni bases.

Well, I may be the last one tuning in. I have been watching Wolfpack athletics for fifty years, but this is the worst collapse of a football team that I can remember watching. Up 10-6 starting the third quarter and the score is now 34-10 with 17 seconds left in that same quarter! Devin Leary threw two picks and has been pulled from the game, possibly due to injury after his last sack coincided with a hard sack. Regardless of the circumstances, it is hard for a team to score four TD's in a single quarter, but that's exactly what happened to turn this once hard fought game into a laugher. The first of turnover saw UNC march halfway down the field for a TD on just a few plays. It was like someone threw a switch and our defense stopped playing hard. And that sort of lackluster play just kept on until things got completely out of control. The season is over officially and Doeren has the duty of figuring this out and putting a better product on the field next season. Ken

Been pondering this today, that this rivalry series needs a name. The big rivalry games all have names like the Iron Bowl, the Little Brown Jug game, Paul Bunyan game, etc ... My favorites come down to simple descriptions, such as "Good Clean Hate" for Georgia Tech versus Georgia. Another is the Civil War between Oregon and Oregon State. The ACC has a few series with names. Though it's fallen out of public note lately, the Clemson-NC State series has been known as the Textile Bowl for decades, given both universities have nationally renown textile schools. UNC and Duke play for the Victory Bell. Back in the old days, an obvious choice would be the Tobacco Bowl, with some artifact related to that industry. But, that's way out of favor now, as even the basketball nomenclature of Tobacco Road to describe the four NC based ACC schools is no longer used. State based concepts could revolve around the state tree (the Dogwood), bird (Cardinal), or perhaps something related to the ubiquitous Carolina Pine tree. Another option would relate to prime industries, with one being the Hog Bowl, but despite the numerous tangible artifacts that could revolve around that name, it doesn't appeal to me. Ken

Agreed. I don't think we're as good a team this year as we were last year. Markell Johnson was, in my view, a given, a top talent point guard in the ACC. He will remain our best player this year and guide the team to whatever success they obtain. The wild card was Braxton Beverly and he is playing as he did last season. He's good, but he has not developed a great game. His decision making can still be detrimental, and many of the turnovers in the first half were a result of that decision making. If he had improved his game over last season, then I thought this team could match or even exceed last year's achievements (and they should have been selected to the NCAA Tournament). There is a lot of season left, and there are some younger players with lots of opportunity to develop, particularly Manny Bates. I think whatever can be done this year to improve the team, will come from players like him. Ken

I would say if the ACC were established today Wake would still be in ahead of App and ECU. Lets start with a look at App. I would 1rst say that Wake would have a stake at the State's best football team. Yes App is currently ranked above them but Wake beat App last season at their place and Wake, currently 8-3 has been ranked this season and has a much tougher schedule than App. I would say App at best might be 8-3 playing Wake's schedule. I would say a draw in football but when you get to the other sports App is nowhere close to Wake. Also Wake has better facilities not only in football (yes App's is pretty nice for the Sunbelt ) but much, much better in other sports. Wake historically has had a good basketball program (yes a big drop off since the Prosser days). App would never be competitive in the ACC in b-ball. App does however have the academic standards that the ACC usually puts a premium on with the exception of Louisville which leads me to ECU. ECU does have comparable facilities in most sports with the ACC. ECU does not have comparable academic standards. Most high school seniors get in meeting the minimum requirements. They would be competitive in most sports with the ACC with the exception of men's b-ball. Like App, ECU most seasons is equivalent to off-season cupcakes for other ACC teams. App is a long, long, way from power 5 caliber even though they can occasionally beat a P5 school in football. ECU is closer but would need to be much more like L-ville (National championships in b-ball, Nationally ranked a lot of seasons in other revenue sports like football and baseball which they have in baseball) if they ever want to get in the ACC under their current academic standards. Wake has proven they belong with their facilities, money, academic standards and their ability to compete and achieve in both revenue and non-revenue sports. The only negative I see with Wake is their attendance in football which is just like Duke and no-one will ever say that Duke does not belong.

Its GTHC week. We win we keep UNC from being bowl eligible. Also, FYI. A bowl game is still not out of the question. There are more slots than there will be 6-6 teams. So a few 5-7 teams will be going to bowl games.

Proping up GT by saying they beat Miami is pretty weak. Miami just lost for Florida International. Miami is terrible.

I agree D. Our running backs played great against Tech and the o-line started to get a push. Leary keeps getting better. I saw him go through his progressions and heís taking what the D is giving him more and more. Also, he legged out a couple of 1st downs. This team is what it is at this point and all Iím looking for is improvement in the young players and Iíve seen that. I canít make any predictions about the Cheats game but Iíll be pulling for the guys in red next Saturday. Anyone calling for Doerenís head at this point is plain mad and having a knee jerk reaction to an admittedly bad season. But the foundation has been laid for success in the coming years with all the freshmen whoíve flashed this year. Let things ply out and the coaching staff adjust. Weíll be better next year and bowling once again.

Good win. Little Rock kept it tight with Memphis most of the game eventually losing by 10. The next 5 games will tell a lot about our team. Memphis, Wisconsin, @Wake, @UNCG, and @Auburn.
