NC State has defended their #1 national ranking well so far, beating Towson 11-1 and starting things off nicely on the road at Miami, winning their first ACC road game 6-3! https://gopack.com/news/2019/3/22/baseball-1-nc-state-defeats-miami-in-first-acc-road-game-6-3.aspx The game started out as a pitchers duel, crafting four scoreless innings before the Wolfpack erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. Miami answered with two in their half of the frame before the Pack settled down and shut the Canes down until they scratched their final run in the eighth. Game two starts Saturday. Ken

Well, I did not get the Georgetown match up I wanted but we still get to play a winnable game for us in Reynolds. And there is still a tie in to this game with Tommy Amaker being the HC at Harvard. Amaker will have the boys ready to play against the Pack so we best be ready ourselves. UNC beat Harvard 77-57 earlier this year, FYI

Same! However, Harvard decided that they would rather travel to Reynolds! And it will be Reynolds for the same reason, as the Hurricanes are hosting Montreal at the same time the NIT game is scheduled. Frankly, I like it that way! I hope we can schedule lots of practice sessions so that Beverly can rediscover his three point stroke! Ken

Everett Case designed Reynolds Coliseum to be a very loud place. It also has the fans on top of the players. It can truly inspire the home team and intimidate the visiting team. I saw it happen both ways many times in my time at school. Even with the seats reduced by 30%, it seems the place can still do all that. Ken

Nice win. I was really worried about this game. Hofstra can score as we saw and I was wondering what kind of emotional state we would be in after being disappointing not getting selected then having to play 48 hours later. Kudos to Keatts and staff for getting the boys focused. Also big shout out to Wolfpack Nation. The home atmosphere looked amazing on TV and it was LOUD. Nothing like playing in the old barn. "They had a sixth man tonight. ... The smartest thing NC State Basketball ever did was playing this game here." -- Hofstra HC Joe Mihalvich

We should match up well with them as they are a perimeter based team that relies heavy on 3s. As I mentioned in another post the 1 common opponent is Mt St Marys. We beat them by 50 and they beat them by 18 the very next game.. Will be interesting to see how the extended 3pt line effects this game.

The Pack opened as an 11.5 favorite but the line has already been bet down to 9.5. As I have seen other mention, traditionally teams expected to be in the NCAAT and end up in the NIT often to not play well and get eliminated. Its a tall task for Keatts to have the guys focused and ready to play tonight. Hopefully they come out with a chip on their shoulder and take care of business.

Outstanding posts, LSmith! Look, if the NCAA had the stones to tell the Power 5 conferences back in August of 2018 that they would continue to use the RPI, then I would accept us being outside the Dance. But, the NCAA didnít have the guts to tell the truth because it risked a revolt of the major conferences to form their own tournament. Purely to chase the money, the number of Division 1 basketball teams exploded. What does a fair system look like to me? You stack all the automatic bid teams seeded as their NET would indicate. Then, the 34 at large teams are selected in strict order with the NET rankings among those teams not in with automatic bids. Everyone would know the criteria, make their schedules accordingly, and know their fate before the announcements are formally made.

The other thing I have been pissed about today is the trashing of Debbie Yow in mostly social media but some main stream media on her defending us and expressing her disappointment in the way the selection committee handled things as far as excluding the NET. That is part of her job as an AD is to go to bat for us and she has always done that, right or wrong, and I believe she is completely right in this. I will admit that I have not always been a big fan of Yow (more a fan the past few years than when she started) but she has always gone to bat for the Pack and stuck her neck out in every controversy. As a female AD she has more balls than most male ADs and that is what I like about her.

Yea and basically not even being one of the 1rst 4 out means we were pre-determined that our resume' would not be considered. Their minds were made up based on distribution of funds to conferences to make everybody as happy as possible. In the real world when a qualified resume' (qualified based on the NET the NCAA said they would use) is not considered it can be construed as discrimination. David Glenn said it best today even if he did not mean to say it that way but he said a small fish (like UNCG) better have at least one quality win and they did not. A big fish (like NC State in a power 5) better have more than 1 quality win (Auburn) to get into the dance. That is a double standard. I am ok with auto bids from every conference. After that the "at large" bids should be the best teams left in college basketball. The selection committee fails every season at this and especially this season.

What really hurt us was Auburn and Oregon. We may have beaten Auburn but they won their conference tournament and took it out of the committee's hands. Same thing with Oregon. I think we got in last year because we beat Arizona, Duke and Carolina. Had we done something similar to that this year, we might be in the big tourney right now. In any case, we are in the NIT and there is only one thing to do. Take all the anger and frustration all the way to MSG and win the whole thing.

NIT rule modifications The NIT continues to experiment with rules in its tournament. Some changes in the NIT have eventually seeped its way into the mainstream of college basketball, such as the 30-second shot clock and four-foot restricted-area arc. The NCAA playing rules process operates on two-year cycles, rule changes can be approved this May, and could be in effect for next season. There will be four rule modifications for the 2019 tournament: -The 3-point line will be extended by approximately 1 foot, 8 inches to the same distance used by FIBA for international competition (22 feet, 1.75 inches). -The free throw lane will be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet, consistent with the width used by the NBA. -The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds.

Just thought this quote from the NCAA Committee Chairman Bernard Muir would provide insight into what those people really did behind their closed door: Muir also remarked how they rated a team like Belmont higher because they finished 2-2 against quad one teams, while in response to Debbie Yow's concerns, he noted that NC State went 3-9 against quad one teams. Now, in what universe is 2-2 better than 3-9? OK, if that doesn't seem a rational question, then ponder this one ... How many nationally ranked teams did Belmont play in 2018-19? The answer is zero! NC State beat Auburn, who was nationally ranked then and is nationally ranked today. NC State traveled to Wisconsin when it was nationally ranked and played a very tight game. NC State played three of the number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Yes, lost all of those five games, but played Duke tough and took Virginia to overtime in their first meeting. Yet, Belmont is seen as a better team in this idiot's eyes because they played four teams barely in the quad one, and split those four games!

Again, in years past the RPI was used and that strongly measured non-conference SoS. We played 12 quad one games this year. Do you really think that we didn't "play people!" We played 33 games in the regular season, including the conference tournament. Twelve of those opponents were quad one teams -- those teams deemed by all the metrics to be the elite level of competition. That was more than one third of all of our games. Beyond that, we were 9-0 against quad two teams. So, our schedule played 21 of 33 opponents in the two highest quads of merit evaluation. I am sick and tired of the media's self-serving obsession on just non-conference strength of schedule! What you are saying is that we have to schedule 30 quad one opponents to avoid being snubbed. You know what happens as a result of that? A team totally worn down to the point of injury and exhaustion as a result of that. I'm sure the mid-major teams, who play an average of five quad one opponents each year, would love that! They would then get all the money! I'd love to see these mid-major teams routinely play a third of their schedule against quad one teams. Let's see them endure that kind of day-after-day grind and see how they fare. Then, we can finally have a fair evaluation of merit. Ken

It's called money! The work is deliberate and has been ongoing for many years now. These people don't care about merit, but instead cutting up the money so that every conference in America gets a big slice. In their mind, the ACC got their seven and that's all it was going to get! After those seven, they searched for reasons to justify their denial of an eighth and a ninth bid. The list of big conference teams with deserving resumes was significant and this has been going on for way too long now. Simply put, we were all lied to. Ken

They had a losing record in the Big Easy. The only top 25 OOC team they played was Duke and lost by 30. They had a Net of 73. Their only big wins were against Marquette and Villinova in conference but had plenty of bad losses to boot. WTF?

While I am not happy about the snub, I can see why we didn't get in. 9-9 in the ACC just won't cut it. I think what really did us in though was the non- conference schedule. The committee has said for years that they would be looking at that harder. That being said, I thought that would eventually catch up to us and it has. I don't blame Kevin for this, cause schedules are made about 7 years in advance but, I now hope we understand that we have to play people. I mean we have to play Kansas in Lawrence, Michigan State in Lansing, UCLA in Pauley. It doesn't mater if we win but we have to beef up that non-conference schedule. That is the only way we can avoid snubs going forward.

We beat them by 50 our 1rst game and they beat them by 18 the very next game. Like our chances. Win that and we could host Georgetown with Yertseven back in Raleigh on the bench in street clothes. Hereís the difference between RPI and NET. RPI rewards a team for playing in a weak conference and beating them up, and playing ó win or lose ó a slate of nationally ranked non-conference opponents. RPI doesnít reward a team for taking the nation's #1 team into overtime and losing barely if that is a conference game, and the NET does reward that. The mid-majors tweaked the RPI to give them their desired outcomes to the point that it became glaringly obvious. The NET was deliberately designed to correct those creeping inequities. Thatís how NC State could be barely above #100 in the RPI, but #33 in the NET. The ugly truth of selection politics is laid bare now.

Oh, thereís a lot here that fails to pass the sniff check! Derreck and I were not seeking to diminish your concerns out of any sense of personal conflict, but just because of the many promises that the NCAA made about rejecting the RPI as a selection metric, and using only those referenced in Yowís blistering commentary. Those index rankings that Yow referenced all take strength of schedule into account, but were designed to not elevate non-conference SoS so high as the last revised RPIís did. In short, these rankings all take total strength of schedule into account, vice elevating non-conference SoS as somehow having more significance than overall SoS. Had the NCAA not spent the time since August 2018 assuring the Power 5 conferences that this new NET system would be used, then Derreck and I both would have confirmed your concerns. Joe Lunardiís comments confirm what Iíve long suspected, that heís getting feedback from members of the selection committee (off the record) and so he knew they were going to use the RPI vice the NET and the other rankings, which the NCAA spent nearly a year promising everyone would be used. Conferences work hard to put schedules together designed to get their teams into the NCAA Tournament. NC State did that, and people who reneged on their promises used different criteria, and are joined by a chorus of uninformed people who never knew about all those promises that the NCAA made. How outrageous?

Well, fact is your doubts were proven correct and the faith I put in the NCAA doing what they promised the Power 5 conferences that they would do was entirely misplaced. If coaches know what the goal line is, and they miss it, then thatís acceptable. But, the NCAA made promises that they did not keep. The NET did not ever show NC State as a bubble team. LSmith already showed why that was. The tyranny of the mid-majors remains even as a new selection standard was created to end this tyranny. ESPN kept saying there were slots lost by further upsets in conference tournaments. All that should have kept other teams out, not NC State! We were #32 in the NET, and the reasonable cut line for at large bids is #40. The truth is the goal line was published and the schedules built for it, and those on the committee chose to give the NCAA the middle finger. I feel very confident that hell will come from this!
