Derreck started a thread Mid-Season report in Football
We are at the bye week for the season and wanted to reflect back on what we have done and what we have still ahead of us. South Carolina: Someone explain how we lost this game? We out played USC in every aspect except the scoreboard, which is what counts. Turnovers! (0-1) Marshall: We kept the game plan very vanilla and did what needed to be done (1-1) Furman: As with Marshall, the game plan was simple and executed to what was needed to get the win. (2-1) Florida State: Playing FSU after they had like 3 weeks off and starting a new QB, we take this one in their house and make up for the horrible USC loss (3-1, 1-0) Syracuse: Loved the game plan and the execution as well as not letting ourselves down after an emotional win at FSU (4-1, 2-0) Louisville: Pack Nation showed up and rocked the house and in turn the Pack team responded in a big way on National TV (5-1, 3-0) Pittsburgh: Cam out flat but did what good teams do, find a way. IMO one of the most impressive wins. A ton of attention and coming off another big win, this could have been the classic trap game (6-1, 4-0)

Did not think we'd be close to 6-1 at this point. The SoCar loss may not be so bad. Looks like the shine may have already worn off the Louisville win, though. Aside from Jackson, they really aren't very good. That RB from BC is going to demand our full attention.

What was most impressive defensively was that Pitt had over 80 yards in the first half and only had 95 for the game. The D stepped up big time in the second half.

Great win today. Echoing the sentiments of others, good teams find a way to win. Finley and the WR corps weren't particularly sharp -- but damn fine ground game. Hines with 135 JSam with 62 RGII with 46 And holding Pitt to 95 yards on the ground. Goo d turnover margin.

Great win by the Pack. They weren't hitting on all cylinders for the first half and a bad break with a poor officiating call negating a late 2nd qtr. TD. Nevertheless, they came out with a purpose for the 3rd qtr. by holding Pitt to only 3 second half points while tacking on an additional 21 points themselves to secure a 35-17 win. Good teams find ways to win even when they're not getting the breaks. Gentlemen we finally have a good team. Way to go Coach Doeren and staff! Way to go Wolfpack players!

I'm Swofford's defense, we didn't go the way of the Big East. That buys a lot of good will from the rest of the schools. As I posted before the UNC System or the state legislature could and should do something to sanction them for breaking the spirit of the law.

The lack of specific NCAA bylaws did not prevent them for whacking Penn State with a four year bowl game ban (reduced to two years), along with other penalties, for the Sandusky child-rape scandal. If the NCAA cared they could have done something, but they know The Chears are a big time b-ball draw, and the NCAA makes its money off of the Men's College Basketball Tournament.

A workman like effort. Team was flat initially, with the receivers dropping a number of good passes and Finley overthrowing a few others. The Pitt secondary also broke up a few passes by slapping the ball away immediately after the receiver got his hands on the ball. But, this game result is the sign of a quality team. You come off an emotionally draining and euphoric home win to travel to a mundane college football environment, against a struggling team hungry for a win on Homecoming Day. Quality teams persevere and win games like this by grinding it out. That's exactly what the Pack did today to improve to 6-1 (4-0 ACC). In a stat that few will care about because when you achieve it, you have higher prizes on your horizon, but for the first time in a very long time, NC State is bowl eligible before the month of October ends! The last time the team achieved that result was the 2010 season, when they beat #16 FSU at home on 28 October to improve to 6-2. The last time the Pack was at 6-1 or better to start the first seven games of the season was 2002, when the Pack was coached by Chuck Amato with Phillip Rivers as QB. That was the same season that the Pack opened up their season going 9-0. The Pack won the Gator Bowl against Notre Dame to finish the season with an 11-3 mark. Ken

In fairness, the score should be 28-14 with us having the ball deep in Pitt territory midway in the fourth quarter. That offensive pass interference call was just brutally wrong. Given that Pitt's offense has fallen back to their season level, if we can punch it in for a touchdown (which one hopes the officials don't find another way to take away) then we should be in good position to go home with the W. This is the worst I've seen State play all year. Pitt's run D is like 108th in the country and we're making them look like pros. Their offense is equally inept and they've moved the ball at will at times. We suck today.

If we're inside the twenty yard line were in four down territory IMO. These kickers are atrocious. That being said this is typical State football, playing to the level to your competition. These guys are going to lose this game for their "I don't give a $&!? attitude". They need to get their head out of their butts and start playing like this game matters, which it does greatly.

Finally a good drive that ends with a missed 36 yard fg by Wise to end the half. Coaches need to give each player (except Hines) a Red Bull and a hard kick in the ass before the start of the 2nd half.

We aren't getting the best refs in this game. They work the marquee matchups instead. And to make matters worse, Carson Wise's field goal attempt was so off the mark that it was pathetic! He shanked the ball at least 25 yards wide of the goal post! Ken

That was a bullshit call to rob NC State of the late first half touchdown. The contact happened when our receiver was being chucked by the defender, physical contact engagement, and while being engaged, he made slight contact with the other defender who was trying to get through the chuck play. It was a call in violation to the rulebook. A pick play can only be called when the receiver initiates contact with the defender to rub him out of the play. When the receiver is being chucked, that cannot be the call. Ken

Passing game is not crisp at all. Finley is like 1-7. Overthrowing, receivers, throwing high. He is struggling. Nyeim Hines though, is having a monster game. He's run a TD for 80+ yards and a punt for 90+ yards and just help down a punt inside the 5 yard line. Way to g young man!

No, I go the opposite direction on this. Our universities exist to educate and offer a rigorous degree program that teaching youth to be productive adult citizens. The athletic end of that is for entertainment. If the NCAA will not promote the academic mission of higher education, then it should be abolished and a new organization created. In my view, the NCAA destroyed itself yesterday. They proved that their bylaws are ineffective to ensure the proper balanced of academics are maintained with athletics. I believe in the academic mission of universities and firmly believe it takes priority over the privilege of playing organized sports. The money I donate to the Wolfpack Club is designed to fund scholarships, not to reward joke classes that make a mockery of academic pursuit. Leadership is focusing on what is right and moral and ensuring that is the path followed. Not only can that balance be enforced, it must be enforced. So, let's get a new organization in place that will. Ken

I believe that the ACC member schools should move to severely sanction "U"NC following this abdication by the NCAA. They should be suspended from conference participation for some period to be determined. Of course Swafford won't go along with this so the schools should vote to remove him. Anything less than this kind of action is silent complicity in the "U"NC institutionalized academic fraud.
