Just three games left and the next one sees the Pack host a strong Florida State team. For the Pack, the immediate goal is their twentieth win of the regular season. For FSU, the goal is to get back into the upper half of the ACC standings and lock down their NCAA resume. FSU is coming into the matchup on a two game winning streak, beating Clemson and Pitt at home. The Pack is on a three game winning steak, beating Syracuse and Wake on the road, and BC at home. Long term goal for NC State is to win out and finish in the top four and earn the double bye which has been so important to being able to win the ACC Tournament. Game time is 25 Feb at 18:00, broadcast on ESPN-U. Go Pack!

We enjoy a combination of tie-breakers over Duke and Clemson. No one enjoys any tie-breaker over Virginia, and they won't need one anyway. They are number one. That leaves UNC. The Heels split with NC State and Clemson. They beat Duke at home and finish the regular season at Duke. We need Duke to win that game. If that happens, then UNC needs to finish below us, and we need to at least tie with Duke and Clemson to finish in second place. A lot has to fall into place for that to happen. But, it's a heap better to have that kind of discussion in February, than the discussion of NCAA or NIT or nothing! Ken

I was looking at some things and actually 3rd place is a possibility, but a long shot. 4th place is more reasonable. We would need to win 2 of the final 3 at minimum.

The Pack improved their record to 3-1 on the young season by coming back to beat North Carolina A&T 9-7. http://gopack.com/news/2018/2/20/baseball-kinnemans-six-rbis-lead-12th-ranked-pack9-past-n-c-a-t.aspx A&T put the hammer down early and vaulted to a 5-0 lead by the end of the third inning, but the Pack bats hung a five spot in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, the big blast being a grand slam by Brett Kinneman. The Aggies tallied two more in the seventh before the Pack answered in the bottom of the frame with four of their own to secure the final winning margin. Ken

Yeah, the first five minutes was a case where the Pack couldnít throw it the ocean and BC could only score six points to go up 6-0! Then, we started hitting our shots like a house on fire and went to the locker room up 44-28. The second half saw the team manage a double digit lead. A workmanlike 82-66 home win over a BC team the Wolfpack was favored to beat by five. NC State is now 19-9 (9-6 ACC), which a good place to be at this point. Ken

To all, I am ECSTATIC with the results of Coach Keatts and staffís first year ! They have exceeded my expectations by a mile thus far. Preseason, or at least early season, I think I predicted only 4 conference wins for this team. They have played above and beyond what I thought remotely possible. That said, I would still like to see adjustments during the game to put clamps on the opposing teamís hot hand. Perhaps the talent isnít there yet, in terms of a lock-down defender. Perhaps itís a case of ďpicking your poisonĒ. Just something to disrupt that playerís rhythm. Perhaps that capacity will come once Keatts has an opportunity to recruit his players. Heís done a marvelous job with the hand dealt (and Iím not saying this team doesnít have talent - it certainly does). I think - totally unbiased, of course - that he should be hands down ACC Coach of the Year, no matter where UVA finishes nationally. Like I said, Good is Good, Better is Better !

Common man, ya gotten lighten up a little bit. Keatts is taking a team that was recruited to play an entirely different style and is winning. There has been a ton of improvement from the last two years. Is it perfect? No, but it is much better and at least the guys are playing with effort. Frankly, we controlled this game for nearly the entire game. WF only got it close at the end. And in the ACC, against a rival on the road, you should expect the home team to make a run and the end. And they did. We were able to hold them off and get the W.

I believe it is a matter of Keatts picking his poison based on the size and athleticism of our players and allowing more 2 pt buckets to stop teams from going off on us from behind the arc which we have done a very good job on the past few games. Usually one player having a good offensive game in the paint is not going to kill you (with the exception of what Maye did to us) if you limit the other 4 and defend the 3 point line well. I have no problem with our effort on defense. We are just not there yet and don't have the length and athleticism to be the type of defensive team that a Virginia is.

Hey we won. In the immortal words of the late Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along." :p. Seriously though, State has 4 road wins this year and we've got all winnable games of the 4 that remain. There's @ Ga. Tech, BC, FSU and Louisville. Finish string and we'll be 12-6 and might squeak our way in to a top 4 ACC finish. Every win just builds our seeding in the dance and one more will equal the win totals in the ACC for the last two years. Lots and lots to play for so let's do or best to stay positive. I like what I see that KK is trying to build here and I believe State will be where it was back in the 80's with Jimmy V.

For NC State, it's another opportunity to further solidify their NCAA resume. For Boston College, it's an opportunity to earn their first ACC road win, and play their way out of the dreaded bottom four. No ACC team is a cupcake, none can be chalked up as an automatic win. All conference teams have talent, and can beat you if you don't bring your best effort. Proof is that BC upset then #25 Miami in Chestnut Hill. NC State needs to once again take care of business. Game is this Tuesday, 20 Feb @ 19:00 eastern, broadcast on Fox Sports Net. Ken

This Game. This game played on the road January 24th is the reason we are where we are now. We are now 18-9 overall and 8-6 in the ACC and certainly an "above the bubble" team at this point in the season. It seems looking back with a few exceptions most years since the 1980s when we have made the dance we had to play our way in via the ACC tournament. We are in a position with 4 ACC games left and 3 at home to solidify the dance prior to the tournament and most likely will see a day one bye and in the the hunt for a top four two day bye in the ACC Tournament. We were in prime position to lose "this game" back on January 24th". We were down by double digits for a large percentage of the game. Pitt could have got their only ACC win this game and if they did I feel would have sent our season in a downward spiral. Instead we found a way to win shooting horribly and playing horribly and wnet into the Dean Dome the very next game and upset the holes. I feel any previous Pack team, even the best NCAA tournament teams under HWSNBM and Gott would have lost this game. This team turned this season around that night. I questioned in this game thread why this team cannot just hit freakin shots. Since this game we have shot over 40% from behind the arc in 4 of the 6 games we have played since Pitt. We are finding our rhythm offensively and continuing to hustle out wins. Under Coach Keatts while I still feel there is a lot to work on we can count on hard nose all out effort even in losses and I only can pin point about 2 WTF losses: UNCG (although a very good team 2nd in their conference) and the at Notre Dame loss. I will take only 2 WTFs in a season. Usually there are a lot more and we are left asking WTF at the end of the season like last season where we see Dennis Smith Jr going off in the NBA and this weekend in the slam dunk contest and we ask WTF????? We had a losing season with this guy. Not his fault but damn!!!

I agree, goal one is the NCAA, and this is goal two, and one that I think we should focus on. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that we can win all four of our remaining games, which are: Boston College Florida State @ Georgia Tech Louisville I like that three of our last four are at home. But, FSU and Louisville are strong teams. And truth remains that if you don't bring your game against any ACC opponent, you're likely to get sent home spanked! Our last remaining ACC road game is against Georgia Tech, who's reeling now from losing their best player for the season due to a fractured arm. We just need to march into their barn with a determination to add to their misery!

Keatts 4-1 against in state ACC rivals. I will take that any day. I think we will take care of business and get into the dance. I am looking now at the bigger picture which is we are not out of the running to finish top 4 in the ACC and get a double buy in the ACC tourney which would pretty much guarantee a lofty seed in the dance. Win out and the holes fall at Duke and we r tied with them for 4th. Also Clemson has had some injuries and could drop a couple of games these next 2 weeks.

Win this one, and State has 18 wins, closing out the regular season with three out of four at home, needing only one win to finish at .500 in conference, and two wins to be above .500 with 20 wins. I would think that would guarantee an NCAA berth. Final four games : vs BC, vs FSU, at GT, vs Louisville... You can DO this, Pack !!!

Baseball swept Seton Hall to open up their regular season, and the Wolfpack ladies got softball off to an equally good start by defeating #22 Ohio State to open their season the right way! The tight 5-4 affair was highlighted by a grand slam by Timberlyn Shurbutt in the sixth, which flipped the game to the Pack's advantage 4-2. The Buckeyes answered with two in the top of the seventh to tie the game. NC State secured the win in walkoff fashion, after the umpire ruled the Pack's runner at third base was obstructed from scoring on a fielder's choice to second base. http://gopack.com/news/2018/2/16/pack-softball-takes-down-22-ohio-state-in-home-opener.aspx Ken

Brock Deatherage brought the heavy lumber, going 3-4 with a solo homer in the bottom of the second to opening the scoring. Brian Brown earned the win with six complete, surrendering just one run. Game two was more of a pitcher's duel, ending 3-1 for the Pack. The Hall opened up the scoring with an RBI double in the first. NC State quickly answered with two in the third, and added an insurance tally an inning later. Johnny Piedmonte earned the victory, pitching seven complete of two-hit ball, surrendering the only Seton Hall run. The series is scheduled to conclude at 13:00 Sunday.

Like for most of the match, it was nationally ranked opponents versus each other. With that result, NC State earned an undefeated dual match conference season and therefore the ACC Dual Championships. The Pack concludes the regular season Sunday as they host #3 Ohio State.

Seems like this stuff is happening all over the place now -- officials putting themselves front and center at college sporting events, turning themselves into the star of the show! Pac-12 official Randy McCall first issued a warning to an unnamed Arizona State cheerleader, and then after it happened again, tossed the cheerleader from the game! The offense was that the cheerleader used his megaphone to address an individual player from the opposition! Shit! By that zany standard, the officials could have closed Reynolds back in the day when we designated a single player to cheer like hell whenever he touched the ball, and then stop cheering soon as he unloaded it. The effect was amazing, and many times it unraveled an opposition player, who had no idea what was happening! McCall's statement after the game read: "He was yelling, using the megaphone to call out people by name, which is not acceptable. He was asked to please stop, and he chose not to."

Without a doubt, 100% objectionable and unacceptable conduct by the officials who worked that game. The official who made the technical calls (assuming the same person) should be immediately fired and have it made clear he will never officiate another sporting event again. And I agree with your other idea. The officials seem aloof from immediate and public responsibility for their actions. Forcing the game officials to face the media would allow their actions to be publicly scrutinized. It would help moderate away the arrogance that sometimes fuels bad officials. Ken

I watched / rewatched foul calls too. Refs blew a few. If Johnson had not bumped and got pushed twice they may have called 2 Ts on Cuse. IMO the lopsided number called against State was due to: 1. Syracuse played zone the entire game. 2. Keats drilled in practice to be more aggressive in the paint. Do you think Keats had to bring in a tutor to teach the team to play zone to prepare for the game?

Three point shooting is how we won this game. That's about the only way we could have, and it helped that Syracuse shot poorly from the charity stripe that the officials bestowed upon the Orange as a site of ownership! The Cuse shot 70.4% from the free throw line (19-27). The Pack shot 76.9% from the free throw line (10-13)! To counter this imbalance, we hit 10 three point shots and Syracuse hit just five! Ergo! A difference in made three's of 15 to counter an imbalance of 9 extra free throws -- a six point margin in our favor. We lost the other two points due to the Cuse having two extra points in the paint. Ken

Yes, Sam Hunt came up big! Keatts made the commit that this was the biggest "team" win of the season and that all 9 players that played had a positive effect on the outcome of the game. I heard an interview a couple of months ago with Hunts coach at A&T who gave high praises on Hunt's character. This was a game that everyone contributed and none bigger than Hunts huge baskets at critical points. Very happy for him. And yes. The Pack victory over the #13th rank Paul Pasqualoni coached Syracuse team counts!. Barnette's connection to Tory Holt for the 2 point conversion that game was probably their biggest of the many thousands of yards those two connected on. Too bad we did not have a defense at the time to compliment Barnette and Holt.

Scrappy effort, despite the lopsided officiating. Bigs were useless tonight. Abu had two points and one rebound, Yurt looked scared silly. Lennard at least showed some toughness on defense, and got a couple of crucial buckets. Hunt was the hero tonight, after scoring zip against Carolina on Saturday. He came up HUGE. Hard to believe after the first 7 minutes of the second half, that only Markell fouled out... I thought weíd be lucky to finish the game with five eligible players ! This might not be a great Syracuse team, but this was a GREAT road victory by the Pack. Only their second win ever in the Carrier Dome (third if you count the Mike OíCain win over McNabb 😋).

I will say this is the first Pack team I have seen in years that did not let the awful officiating in a game like this get in their heads and remained resilient enough to pull out the game. That requires a different level of toughness and we showed it last night.

"These three idiots need to get some suspension for their efforts tonight!" I agree but the problem with that is the rest of the ACC officials will rally around the 3 suspended and write their initials on their shoes to show support and make us look like the a-holes (Karl Hess all over again). Lets face it. ACC officials are above reproach when it comes to NC State. Now had that been Joel Berry instead of Markell Johnson? You bet at least one official would be reprimanded if not suspended.
