This one will be tougher than the records indicate. UNC can move the ball and they have been in a lot of games but just could not finish the job. This game was circled on the calendar and they will throw all they have at us. Gimmicks, gadget plays, fakes, etc. Anything and everything will be on the table for this one. Just win Baby! Go to Hell Carolina!

McKay got some extended playing time in the 4th and looked really good leading that TD drive. Made really good reads, hand nice zip on his throws, pretty accurate, and was really good using his running skills to extend the drive. I think the prevailing thought is that Leary would take the reigns over next year from Finley but there is some competition. McKay showed well. Transfer (FSU) Bailey Hockman will also be in the mix. So we will have 3 QB's fighting for the starting job next year. After what I saw from McKay, if he gets beat out and is not the starter then I feel really good about the QB situation going into next year. If he is the starter, I still feel pretty good about next year.

The thing I like about this team (other than playing balls to the wall D for 40 minutes a game which we have not seen at NC State) is the fact that every year we are discussing who our ®go to® guy is and years past we have not always had that. This year obviously Dorn and Markell are fitting that mold but we have at least 6 other players that can hurt you with the ball in their hand at the end of the game. Last game it was Daniels, today it was Bryce and Dorn. I have seen Lockett make incredible plays. I think our diamond in the rough is Funderburk whoś game and touch reminds me of TJ Warren except he is 6ī10 and finish strong around the basket. No illusions here. We have not played anybody yet. I think of the 4 teams we have played UNCA is the only team that has won a game and that was to a NAIA team. I just think worst case scenario we will see a team that hustles their ass off for 40 minutes but I like the upside because we do have a lot of ®go to® guys.

NC State keeps rolling along, beating the Maine Black Bears 82-63. Maine is not a good team, as they came in winless at 0-3. Interestingly, Maine also scheduled six straight road games to start their season. I understand the need for school revenue, but this team does have a home stadium to play in! http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=401082840 One more interesting Maine connection is that their head coach, Richard Barron, was an assistant coach for the NC State women's team from 2009-11. OK, war next week! Forget the damn records. UNC will play this like it's their bowl game. NC State better show up and play like this is more important than their bowl game! For all the hideous record, the truth is that UNC lost their last five ACC games in a row by an average margin of just 7.5 points. That included road games at Virginia and Duke. So, UNC's record is worse than the talent on their team. They also beat the Coastal Division champion Pitt Panthers at home 38-35 for their lone conference win. WAR! Ken

No doubt, but in the larger picture, Valvano's legacy is as much the financial windfall that the building has provided to both NC State and the entire state of North Carolina. So, in a real sense, the money income is something that Valvano would have supported going after. I see PNC Arena as Valvano's lasting legacy as athletic director. He championed for it. But, I know he coached every game of his career at Reynolds, and just as with Kay Yow, his heart remained there. Ken

Rather sad situation here. Division III school Earlham College is shutting down it's football program until at least 2020 after they set a new Division III record of futility, finishing the 2018 season winless to cap a record 53 consecutive defeats! https://www.foxnews.com/sports/indiana-college-cancels-2019-football-season-after-70-6-defeat-and-53-straight-losses Ultimately, the trustees are saying that they need the time off to evaluate their program and try to establish one that can compete. Their last game was a 70-6 shelling by Rose-Hulman College. The private college's enrollment is only about a thousand students. Most high schools, public or private, are larger than that! Ken

I completely agree with your broader statement, but I just dont think of it as a big of a deal as others do. With your job analogy, if one were to continue to bounce around jobs, that would be of concern. A one time thing would not be, to me at least, when making a hire. We are also putting years of wisdom that we have learned onto that of an 18 year old who has yet had time to gain that wisdom. Just think back to the mistakes and misjudgments we made at that age. Now compound that with living under a microscope in the social media age as a D1 athlete.

That's a fair analogy regarding employment, but to add to the truth of that, just one example of walking off a job just a few months after accepting the position is likely to tarnish your resume. In terms of keeping your work history rock solid, yes, one should stay on a job for at least a full year before leaving for another. In fact, job recruiters agree that one should remain on a job for at least two years to avoid building a negative resume pattern. University is one of the ultimate rites of passage as a person grows from child to truly independent adult. I doubt there is a single person who's held a job in which every single day and moment performing that job is a joy. To various degrees all jobs are a combination of good days and difficult days. You are correct that we don't know the precise details of this, and therefore we are to a degree speculating. But, in the strategic sense, I think what others and myself are communicating isn't speculative. It really echoes the reality that we all face in our lives. So, applying proven work ethics onto a college basketball player's decision making does seem very reasonable to me. You accept a position of employment and you have made an obligation to perform that work with the utmost of your skills and dedication. And if you hire someone, you owe that person the utmost of your servant leadership effort to provide said employee with the best available platform to perform the job successfully. When this absolutely required relationship fails for any reason, it becomes an area of concern. Knowledge of the details is not, at least in my view, a prerequisite for regarding the situation negatively, nor against even publicly advocating against the erosion of basic duty and loyalty that's a cornerstone of any successful organization. I'm not piling the world's troubles onto one basketball player, but to be frank, what's happening here remains, as I said earlier, another sign post warning us that as a nation we're going down a path that leads to a very bad place. That is making an assumption that Keatts would have used this scholarship this past year. Would we have picked up an additional player? Possibly, but it is not for certain. I look at it another way. We only had 1 scholarship to give for next year, this opens up another one that could be used. I think a scholarship is a big deal, I am not in favor of paying players at all. I am just putting myself in the kids shoes. Putting it another way. You take a job, you are on the job for 6 months and realize you made a mistake and this is not the best situation for you. With the skill set you can go to another place of employment and be happy and hopefully prosper. Do you stay at the company that you originally went to work for out of loyalty or do you do what you believe is best for you and your future and make a move? That is what Steere did. Bottom line is sometimes it does not turn out the way you thought it would, and a change needs to be made.

Derreck, I think the point Matt is making is that it was and remains one less scholarship that could have been provided to a kid out there who would have coveted the opportunity and given NC State all he had. For a very large group of people, a full ride academic scholarship remains a very big deal. I think Matt has a strong point, and unfortunately, I do think a lot of people don't even consider that angle. It's like too many people think the scholarship is some meaningless and valueless consideration. But, in truth, there's someone out there who coveted that chance and was told no due to the lack of a scholarship. Ken

He gave NSCU everything he had since he walked on campus. He went through conditioning, workouts, practices, etc. He did not just show up to a game and play 4 minutes and leave. Is it a unique situation? Yes it is. Could he have handled it better? yes he could. Do I appreciate him letting the staff know sooner rather than later? yes I do.

Thatís actually what I was going to write. Personally, the ESA is literally the building that Valvano built, but by the time it was finished, folks started to realize there was huge money in corporate naming rights, and money talked over naming what is now our primary arena. This was the best opportunity to answer a long overdue earned legacy for Valvano, and Iím thrilled that the university has belatedly done this. Ken

I won't pretend to understand his decision. Even with the potentially crowded field I think he could have made his mark. I wish him the best and hope he matures enough to see something through.

UNCA usually gives us fits. Not tonight as the Pack dominated 100-49. Daniels led the way with 20 points. The Pack had 5 players in double figures and 2 others with 9 each. The Packs press forced 24 turnovers. Markell went out early in the 1rst with a head injury. Hopefully was sitting due to protocol and not anything that will keep him out of the line-up too long.

My thought on this is it is about PT and this is just a PC announcement. Now to defend Steere, he committed prior Walker, Funderburke, and SJK committing. Steere is a 5 player in this system and that is a lot of bodies for one spot. So I can understand his thought process. And why wait until later to decide? By announcing now, he can transfer in December and be able to play next year. Its also hard for me to criticize transfers when the majority of our team is made up of transfers.
