Funderburk has a remarkable history of fouling out. He did it so many times last year I lost count. Perhaps the refs were relying on "tendencies" again? Here's video of the UVA center THROAT PUNCHING Funderburk and the refs did nothing: https://twitter.com/DH4thePack/status/1219456179459514368 As I said, CRIMINALLY bad officiating. The entire crew should be suspended for a week at a minimum. We're in sole possession of 4th. We aren't very good*, so that means the ACC as a whole may be historically bad. UNC has lost more games than they've won and are in last. They may be historically bad.

The situation with regard to how DJ Funderburk, who went from one foul called at the 9:01 mark in the first half, and then his second foul whistled against him from 11:27 in the second half, then at 8:19 his third foul, and then at 7:14 being called for a technical foul and then fouled out on the next sequence at 6:48 -- that is a situation that stands out. A player who plays under control, with no history of fouling out, suddenly goes from two fouls to fouling out in under two minutes of game time -- that's highly questionable. Add in the rather curious and almost self-convenient foul late on CJ Bryce, and it appears as though the officials were wanting to see Virginia get back into this game. The Bryce foul was a dead ball situation, where the Virginia play ran into him as he was standing still in the paint. This while Virginia was trying to inbound the ball under their defensive basket just after Bryce hit a great shot to put NC State up 52-47 with only 27 seconds left in the game. The way Virginia was struggling on offense, those two free throws made a huge difference, and gave the Cavs confidence, and based on the reaction from his teammates to the Bryce foul, sort of got in the heads of the Pack players. Still, Markell Johnson being a 56% free throw shooter remains an enigma for a senior. It really hurt that he missed the front end of a one-and-one, and then Devon Daniels missed the second of a two shot foul opportunity. That really was what gave Virginia the opportunity.. Ken

One of the biggest gut check win I can remember in almost 50 years of following Pack basketball. We were short handed with only 7 scholarship players and 1 of those being Danny Dixon, we sucked shooting the ball, the officiating sucked mostly against us, and our end game management really sucked. I would say under those conditions a 100% chance for a Pack loss but we won an won with great hustle. A very good road win in the ACC and a very good win to build on and we have a lot of building to do. Just hope we can get Manny back soon but concussion protocol is what it is as we have learned already this season.

Nothing is ever easy in the ACC, especially a road win. But, despite going stone cold for nine minutes in the second half, to see a 42-31 lead evaporate to a two point deficit, NC State went on a late 7-0 run to grab a five point lead with 27 seconds left in the game. But, a series of missed free throws, plus one highly questionable foul on CJ Bryce, allowed Virginia numerous chances to tie or take the lead, but Virginia remained stone cold. The result? NC State just earned a huge road win at Virginia, 53-51! The win improves the Pack to 14-5 (5-3 ACC). That's enough to put the Pack in sole possession of fourth place in the conference, just a half game behind Duke for third. Ken

I have done plenty of research on the effects of concussions because I have had a few. Just kind of overkill and I feel Bates will be out for a while.

#8 NC State women's tennis matched up against #9 South Carolina and won 6-1. Prior to that match, they beat UNC Charlotte 7-0. The Wolfpack has vaulted out to an early 3-0 season record. The win over South Carolina also marked the first time in program history that the Pack defeated a nationally top ten ranked team. Simply put, this is the most talented team that NC State has ever fielded. Ken

Mission accomplished! NC State played a very strong period to close out the first half and to start the second half. Building up a lead of 18 midway in the second half, gave the margin to withstand a Clemson defensive surge to win 60-54. Devon Daniels really played well in this one, and I have to give a modicum of credit to Braxton Beverly, who hit only one shot, but it was a very critical three point attempt late in the second half that took the air out of the Clemson rally. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=401168584 With the win, NC State is now 13-5 (4-3 ACC) which puts the Pack tied for the fourth spot in the conference. There is a deep logjam in conference standing, with a huge group of teams within a game of .500. One game below drops you in a three way tie for ninth. One game above, like for NC State, puts you into a three way tie for fourth.

That's the key problem. He is the horse we need, because he is the one who would fill the role vitally needed to round this team out offensively. And, he's really the only one who can. Bryce has improved his three point shooting, but that's not really his game. And what Bryce does best, he does very well. But, if this team is going to advance, it will have to depend upon someone else and Beverly's minutes need to diminish accordingly. I think Keatts has given Beverly every opportunity to perform and it just isn't happening. Ken

Braxton is what he is. Each year he pads his 3 point percentage in pre-conference games lighting it up against mid majors that do not have the athleticism to defend him like ACC and other P5 teams do. As you mentioned he is not a great defender because of the same reason he is not real good at creating his shot against good defenders because he is not an ACC caliber athlete. He also misses more wide open shots against more athletic defenses because I believe they get in his head. He starts for us because of his floor spacing, ball handling, and he is usually quite cerebral in his decision making. He is also a very good FT shooter. He will have an occasionally good game from behind the arc against ACC teams but will end the season in the low 30% range from behind the arc. If we are depending on him lighting it up every ACC game to make the dance we have our money on the wrong horse IMO.

CJ Bryce returned after missing four games in a row and it made all the difference in the world. NC State with him on the court was an entirely different team. The Pack wins going away at home versus Miami, 80-63, and led solidly for the entire second half. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=401168583 DJ Funderburk is putting together a season worthy of First Team All-ACC. In tonight's game, he threw in 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, a block, and an assist. Devon Daniels added a very good game with 7-11 shooting for 15 points. While Bryce only scored six points, he did so on 3-5 from the floor and added five assists. I remain very much concerned with Braxton Beverly's play. Once again, he shot a very poor 2-10 from the floor, with a 2-8 performance from the three line. He added two rebounds, one assist, and a single foul to the mix. It's just not the kind of performance that is going to help take this team to the NCAA Tournament. I truly believe that with CJ Bryce playing each game, that if Beverly could get his shooting stroke to just a 40% average, that this NC State team could make the Dance. But, as I wrote before, his performance in ACC play is significantly below his career average, which was 38.5% from the three line during his freshman season. His percentage shooting has averaged around in the mid twenties over the last five games played. In addition, Beverly is not a good defender, but if the man can hit the open three shots, then it's a good trade overall. But, when combined with hitting around two for ten, it's hurting the team. The truest sign of an elite team is when they immediately rebound from a loss and get back to being who they really are. The NC State women's basketball team proved that, by traveling to Notre Dame immediately after losing their first game of the season at UNC, and drubbing the Irish 90-56. In this game, there was no repeat of the cold shooting streak that caused them to lose the UNC game. Decided to look up the numbers, recalling that great quote from Bill Russell, and then a surprising thing happened. The stats surprisingly show that NC State is above average in all measures, scoring, shooting percentage, assists per game, and rebounding. Of course, these numbers are not broken down by ACC games, but overall for the season. The only category we rate below average on is three point shooting percentage. But, NC State ranks second in scoring with 78.4 PPG, sixth in rebounding with 37.1 RPG, fourth in shooting percentage at .458, and seventh in free throw percentage at .715. The only mark we are below average in is three point shooting percentage, where we stand ninth at .330. In the other categories, the Pack ranks sixth in assists per game, fifth in steals, and fourth in blocks. Yet, the team is tenth in current ACC standings with a record of 11-5 (2-3 ACC). At this rate, the Pack will not even play in the NIT. So, what gives? Frankly, our team results are almost entirely the result of CJ Bryce's play. And he has not played in our last three games. Bryce individually ranks sixth in scoring, seventeenth in rebounding, tenth in scoring percentage, tenth in free throws, and fifth in steals. The only other Wolfpack players who rank top ten in any category are Markell Johnson who ranks first in assists, DJ Funderburk who ranks second in field goal percentage, Markell Johnson and Devon Daniels, who rank fourth and eighth in steals, and Manny Bates who leads in blocks.

If we do end up getting a post season ban from the Dennis Smith stuff which I don't think we should I hope we can take it this season because it don't look like we are going anywhere after the ACC tourney this season. Also I understand the seriousness of concussions. I have had a few myself playing football from little league through college, but because of all the law suits and everything over the past few years with the NFL, physicians have gone to extremes with concussion protocol. It has had a negative effect because I know high school coaches that will advise their kids not to see a physician unless it is very obvious knocked out cold or eyes completely dilated and loss of cognitive speech signs of concussion because they do not want to lose a player for 3 to 4 weeks. Don't know the deal with Bryce. Just seems a little extreme.

Coming into this game, both NC State and Virginia Tech had identical records (11-4, 2-2 ACC). A 72-58 defeat by the Hokies took care of that equality. Same as during the Clemson game, the Pack was close midway in the second half, but then saw its opponent rip off significant runs and win going away. Once again, CJ Bryce was out due to injury. In terms of individual play, only one NC State player had a good day, DJ Funderburk, who shot 7-13 from the floor and added four of five three throw attempts, plus nine rebounds. Overall, the Pack shot a very poor 31.9% from the floor, which says a lot about how everyone else played. The team simply is not able to hit perimeter shots, going 6-30 from the three line, and that's very much below average for ACC teams. It's nearly impossible to win against a quality opponent if you brick over two thirds of your shot attempts. Ken

Bryce sat out for his third straight game, so that situation is becoming murkier. Things were not looking good as Notre Dame kept up a five to ten point lead throughout most of the game. But, it was a gutty comeback at home for NC State, and they pulled it out. Funderburk was huge in this game, a rebounding machine and a scoring machine, scoring 16 points with a team leading nine rebounds. He was about perfect from the free throw line, and a big man who hits his free throw attempts is a weapon. But, without question, the big man was Markell Johnson, who scored a game leading 27 points, and added a game leading seven assists. Ken

That's not on Bryce's absence. 70 points should be well more than enough to beat Clemson. Remember this from the FIU game thread?

So Mckenzie got a new toy for Christmas and it is awesome. Its through a company called Diamond Kinetics. and it is a softball that tracks her pitches during a bullpen session. I am able to look at her pitch speed, spin rate, extension, spin direction, time to plate (calculated pitch speed), delivery, reach back to release, and pitch location. I can also video her pitches (pitch by pitch) that allows us to break down her pitching motion while comparing everything to the matrix we are developing on her pitches. So instead of forcing her into a box and saying pitch this way we are able to break it down and develop a pitching style that best fits her. So, she got it Christmas day and the first time we used it was December 28th. That day the "fastest" she threw (we focused on fastballs) was 53-54 MPH. Which for a 13 year old is just above average speed (45-52 is the listed average speed). After breaking down the stats, we were able to tweak her pitch from the data and this past Saturday she hit 59 MPH. That is the average speeds of a pitcher who is 16. So in just over a weeks time and 2 bull pen sessions her fastball went up 5 MPH. Her pitching coach could not believe it. We all felt that there was more in her pitches that we just were not getting from her and the data really helped us figure it out. All in her stride. The quicker she got her plant foot down the faster the pitch. Which kinda goes against what a softball pitcher is taught. You are taught to stride out as far as you can. With this, we were able to find a happy medium to stride length to release point. The pitching coach as now ordered one for her other lessons to use. Now we are going to focus on here change-up and breaking balls and see what improvements we can make there.

Without him, we become an easy team to defend against, and judging by the experiences against Georgia Tech and Clemson, an even easier team to score against. We knew that Bryce was an excellent player when he transferred out of UNC-Wilmington, where he led Keatts' team there and thought so much of Keatts that he transferred to NC State when he was hired. Sometimes, players develop far beyond what anyone thought was capable. I think of Tom Gugliotta and Richard Howell in that regard, though Howell was a highly rated recruit out of Marietta, GA. Then, you get other players who are heralded as recruits, but never seem to reach the top. It happens, and for a lot of different reasons. The most consistent flaw I have seen over the years is an inability to develop perimeter shooting skills. We either get a player who has that finely honed skill out of high school, or we never see it on the court. Unfortunately, that's the limit of what I can comment on. I can only state the action, and I cannot explain the cause. Ken

It is going to be hard to win any ACC game with our leading scorer in concussion protocol. Only played 7 today. That is very thin with our talent level and our style of play. Clemson is not a good team so a big missed opp to get an ACC road win today.

The lack of interest in this game tells a lot and almost is as harmful as the final score. The ACC schedule this year was front loaded to be in favor of NC State, to establish positive momentum within the conference by playing a series of teams early that are not expected to finish strong. Clemson was foremost among those teams, as they came into this game Saturday with a 6-7 overall record, and winless at 0-3 in the ACC. It was equal measures of losing, but also added harm that the Pack was beaten 81-70, and really folded down the stretch of the second half, clawing back to a single point deficit, but then withering across the final seven minutes to see Clemson establish and then maintain a double digit advantage and win by eleven points. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game?gameId=401168582 The fact is that NC State cannot lose games like this and expect to be taken seriously as a worthy ACC team. It doesn't matter that CJ Bryce sat out his second straight game, there is remaining talent enough on this squad that they should have been able to hold up their end against a team as depleted in talent as Clemson is this year. I'm calling out Braxton Beverly, who once again had a very poor shooting game, and with Bryce out of the lineup, it was Beverly who needed to step up and lead the scoring effort. As in the Appalachian State game, Beverly shot miserably. In this game, he shot 2-7 overall and 1-2 from the three line. He also finished with three fouls, no assists, and two rebounds. He played 34 minutes of game time, which was third most among all Wolfpack players. Truth is, before the season started, I listed Beverly as the bellwether for how this season would progress. It wasn't because he was expected to be our best player, Markell Johnson is clearly that player. Nor was it because he would be our best offensive player, as last season CJ Bryce proved that he was. Beverly was the returning upperclassman who had the potential to elevate the Wolfpack from barely good to truly excellent. So far, he has failed to do that, and is instead threatening to take the Pack from barely good to well below average in the ACC. In his last four games, Beverly has shot 20% at Auburn, 0% versus Citadel, 18.2% versus App State, and now 28.6% at Clemson. He's only finished a game with double digits in scoring three times all season, and only once in the last 12 games. The record in the ACC for NC State (1-2 so far) has a lot to do with his continued struggle putting points on the board. NC State needs that effective wing player to prevent defenses from packing it in the paint to deny our front court players open space to get inlet passes and score. Moreover, slashers like CJ Bryce and Markell Johnson also benefit from a more balanced defense. You don't play against a balanced defense when the opponent dares you to shoot wide open three point attempts and you brick the vast majority of them!

People are reading way too much into the co-coordinator thing. Des called the plays and thus why he was the one to be fired and not McDonald.
