Wake upset FSU 7-4, which means Thursday’s game between Wake and NC State is a winner-take-pool affair. If Wake wins they advance undefeated in pool play. If the Pack wins, then they advance via a three-way tie even if FSU beats NC State on Friday. Ken

Going in to this, draft analysts saw him as a high second round pick. If he’s receiving feedback that he’s likely a first round pick, then he won’t play for NC State. I just hope he isn’t being given first round feedback and ends up drafted in round two. Ken

Games start today. with the lower seeded teams battling first. Tuesday's slate of games are: Boston College vs Clemson at 11:00 Wake Forest vs Florida State at 15:00 Notre Dame vs Duke at 19:00 For NC State, the seeding in Pool C is so important. If Wake Forest beats FSU, and then on Thursday NC State opens play and beats Wake, then the Pack advances to the semi-finals by virtue of seed-dependent tie-breaking. The Friday game against FSU would then not matter. If Wake beats both FSU and NC State, then they advance to the semi-finals. If FSU beats Wake today, then the winner of Friday's game advances to the semi-finals regardless of the Thursday game between Wake and NC State!

Lecque has been turning heads during the NBA draft combine. He has easily been the best athlete on the floor. If anyone has twitter I suggest looking at @overtime as they have a lot of video of Lecque doing well. The story on Lecque is he is getting comparisons to Russell Westbrook from an athleticism standpoint and that is turning people's heads. The challenge is that his shot is not all that great but because of that elite athleticism, people cannot keep him from getting to the rim. What does that mean? We will see. But my money is on him staying in the draft at this point.

Its looking more and more like Johnson will return to Raleigh for one more year. Johnson is young for his class (turns 21 in August) so his clock is not ticking like a lot of these guys. For example, Lacey was 23 after his Jr year, Wyatt Walker is 23. So the pressure to start making money is not there like those guys. We will see what happens.

NC State earned significant benefit from winning the UNC road series to close out the regular season. There was a logjam for the third seed heading into the tournament, but the Pack earned sole possession of that spot on Sunday. The Pack's pool will include Florida State and Wake Forest. The Pack will enjoy the top seed in that bracket pool, which in the tournament format is a huge benefit. Louisville ran away with the conference top spot, and Georgia Tech took a one game advantage to earn the second seed. Right now, the ACC is solid to get five teams in the NCAA Regionals, with Louisville, Georgia Tech, and NC State likely to host. Florida State is on the bubble to get in the field, as is Clemson. Depending upon the poll, going into the UNC road series, the Wolfpack was ranked #13 to #14. After beating #15 UNC, the Pack will likely move up a few spots to end the regular season just outside the top ten. Ken

The Wolfpack dominated game three, winning 11-0 and likely clinching the Pack a top 16 seed to host an NCAA Regional. https://gopack.com/news/2019/5/18/baseball-wolfpack-blanks-heels-clinches-series.aspx It was also the first time since taking two of three from Florida State that the Pack was able to take a series from a nationally ranked opponent. The team may well have drawn inspiration from the Friday passing of their SID Bruce Winkworth, and the way the Pack stormed back to win games two and three in dominating fashion was very impressive. UNC had previously dominated on their home field. The ACC Tournament is up next. Ken

Bruce Winkworth passed away from cancer on Friday, 17 May 2019. He was the NC State baseball SID, and an NC State alumnus. But, for me, he was much more than that. I had the pleasure to work with Bruce for a few years on the NC State newspaper, The Technician. Bruce was a columnist and sports reporters while I was the news and opinion editor. I merely dabbled in journalism and majored in the US Air Force. Bruce was clearly a professional journalist even then. He was also a very thoughtful, professional, and kind person. He remained that way his entire life. After we both graduated, I learned that Bruce was hired as a writer for a baseball publication, but he then found his way back home on the NC State Athletic Department staff, and he never looked back. He was the color commentator for Wolfpack baseball radio broadcasts before becoming the SID. There could not have been a more perfect match than for Bruce to become the NC State baseball SID. He loved baseball, giving us something in common, though his knowledge of the sport vastly exceeded most everyone else's. Farewell, Bruce, you will be greatly missed! Ken

The Wolfpack made a huge statement in game two, running over UNC 11-2! The runs came quick and frequent, as NC State rattled off three in the first, another three in the fourth, another three in the sixth, and for good measure added solo strikes in the fifth and seventh! In all, fourteen hits were pounded out. That combined with stout pitching as UNC dented the plate for the first time in the fifth and did not score again until the eighth, by which time the margin was ten runs. NC State has their chance to take this series on Sunday! Go Pack! Ken

Since the ACC Tournament starts next week, the concluding regular series tilts start Thursday vice Friday. For the Wolfpack, it means traveling to #13 UNC. The Pack has mostly struggled against other ranked teams. They split with Coastal Carolina, took two of three against then #1 Florida State, but were swept by then #13 Louisville. This is NC State’s chance to make late noise and make a statement to host an NCAA Regional! Go Pack! Ken

Pack dropped game two 4-3 in frustrating fashion. An inability to score from second on a sharp single to right field, resulting in the third out at the plate, combined with sloppy play at short in the top of the tenth, handed Clemson the winning margin. No error was charged on either play, but a sharp grounder to short was boxed, resulting in no throw to first, followed by a dropped throw to second on a subsequent stolen base attempt, led to another hit to short that the shortstop backtracked on and allowed to go past him without even getting a glove on it. It was charitable scoring to say the least that prevented three errors from being charged in the top of the tenth! Regardless, the winning run was gift wrapped for the Tigers. Baseball is primarily pitching and defense and in this one, the Pack's poor fielding lost them the game. Ken

As far as the NCAA being "late to the party" from everything I have read and heard they have been restricted from the Feds from doing anything until the FBI investigation was complete. Now that they are at the party you better believe they are going to crash it. IMO the logical thing the NCAA should do is have every win vacated that an illegal player participated in and ban any coach involved from ever coaching in the NCAA again and any AD involved permanently removed. That is the basis of what they should do to preserve the integrity of fairness in college athletics but the NCAA has never been logical and IMO fair. They have the "lack of institutional control" that punishes the entire program by restricting scholarships and banning post season play for at least a year but often more. This punishes kids in the program who were not involved but more importantly if it is a revenue sport it hurts funding for the institution involved to fund non-revenue sports. Basically a basketball team banned from any postseason or a football team banned from playing in a bowl effects the softball team and they had nothing to do with it.

The NCAA has started an investigation of the Arizona men's basketball program over the illegal payments scheme which was previously investigated and prosecuted by the federal government. The relationship with NC State is clear. Former coaches Mark Gottfried and Orlando Early have been implicated in a similar illegal payment scheme to former player Dennis Smith. From my own perspective, this is a classic case of the NCAA arriving last at the party, and since this is all long after people were prosecuted and found guilty of the actions, the likelihood of the NCAA ultimately handing down sanctions is very high. My guess is that the Arizona investigation is just the start of it. It is widely believed that a dozen or so schools are implicated in this payment scheme in some way. What I hope ultimately happens is that the NCAA makes very clear rulings and that combined with the feds, the role of agents, apparel companies, and the AAU basketball circuit are severely reined in. Hopefully the win today will build some confidence because this is a team that has not been playing with much of that of late. Seems like the past few seasons we have started out hot and faltered down the stretch. Only 2 more ACC series left against Clemson and the "holes". Got to win those.

Kelvin Harmon was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round (#206 overall). This pick surprises me, not because Harmon was drafted, but that he was the 206th pick taken overall. Harmon was projected as the 100th best draft pick overall, and Washington got a steal with this choice. To show how loaded the wide receiver corps was in this draft, despite being the 100th best prospect overall, Harmon was rated as the 14th best wide receiver. Regardless, I think even this ranking was low. Harmon was the go to feature receiver for Ryan Finley all season and he constantly achieved separation along with a very reliable pair of hands combined with excellent athleticism. To be blunt honest about it, I evaluated Finley's excellence as the sixth best quarterback due to how his receivers, primarily Harmon, excelled. ESPN's analysis of Harmon said this: Other than Garrett Bradbury, who's likely to have a long and outstanding NFL career, I think Kelvin Harmon will have the next greatest long term impact in the NFL.

The bloom has fallen, and frankly NC State needs to rediscover its mojo! The Pack saw Notre Dame score two in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead and beat NC State 5-4 in game one of their three game series at South Bend. Game two is tonight, and the Pack needs to take these next two games. Overall, for the month of April, NC State has gone 5-9 (3-7 ACC) and has dropped to second place in the Atlantic standings behind surging Louisville, and just a half game ahead of Florida State. So, it's time to get things back on track because the Pack has two remaining against Notre Dame and series at home versus Clemson and at UNC to improve their standings in the ACC. Ken

Ryan Finley was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round (#104 overall). Finley now joins Pratt on the Bengals roster. The selection of quarterbacks was THE surprise, and criticism, of this draft. Finley was considered the #4 quarterback on the board, and yet he was the sixth quarterback selected. However, the knocks on Finley were his physical size, where he is being politely listed in the draft summaries as being "lean." That is code speak for being susceptible to injury. His arm strength is rated as being average, and with the athleticism in the NFL, I think this was the biggest concern with Finley -- his demonstrated inability to accurately throw past 25 yards. Of significant, but less concern, was his dedicated skill set as a pocket passer, without the ability to run for first downs. All that said, this surprised most analysts that Finley fell to the early fourth round, primarily because one of the picks ahead of him is being criticized. The New York Giants selected Daniel Jones of Duke in the first round (overall #6 pick). Jones was rated as the sixth best quarterback in the draft. The draft analysis on him rated his arm strength as average and even notes how he telegraphs passes. This pick is being cited as the biggest mistake in the draft this year. The Carolina Panthers then selected Will Grier in the third round (#36 overall). But, this makes sense because the Panthers' offensive sets are designed for Cam Newton and Grier was the best fit available for this offensive scheme. Still, Grier was graded as the seventh best quarterback. Personally speaking; however, I can appreciate how the Panthers valued Grier's game for their system and his strengths are Finley's weaknesses. On the other hand, most analysts cannot understand the Giants picking Jones ahead of Finley, given that Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock were both available. Haskins was graded the second best QB, while Lock was graded #3.

She held herself out to the public and was earnestly committed to personally answering questions and comments posed to her. I admired her for this. Her performance as NC State Athletic Director has established her as the most successful occupant of that office ever. Willis Casey was a pioneering success as AD, and our athletic building is rightfully named for him. But, not even Willis himself established NC State to the level of overall athletic success which Debbie Yow has presided over. It has been a remarkable nine years indeed! I am going to miss her!
