It's called money! The work is deliberate and has been ongoing for many years now. These people don't care about merit, but instead cutting up the money so that every conference in America gets a big slice. In their mind, the ACC got their seven and that's all it was going to get! After those seven, they searched for reasons to justify their denial of an eighth and a ninth bid. The list of big conference teams with deserving resumes was significant and this has been going on for way too long now. Simply put, we were all lied to. Ken

Last I am gonna comment on this but dont see how any person with a couple of brain cells can look at us and St Johns and put them in the dance and snub us. They had a losing record in the Big Easy. The only top 25 OOC team they played was Duke and lost by 30. They had a Net of 73. Their only big wins were against Marquette and Villinova in conference but had plenty of bad losses to boot. WTF?

While I am not happy about the snub, I can see why we didn't get in. 9-9 in the ACC just won't cut it. I think what really did us in though was the non- conference schedule. The committee has said for years that they would be looking at that harder. That being said, I thought that would eventually catch up to us and it has. I don't blame Kevin for this, cause schedules are made about 7 years in advance but, I now hope we understand that we have to play people. I mean we have to play Kansas in Lawrence, Michigan State in Lansing, UCLA in Pauley. It doesn't mater if we win but we have to beef up that non-conference schedule. That is the only way we can avoid snubs going forward.

There will be a lot of discussion on our dance snub and I feel we need to discuss it but we do have more basketball to play. First up is Hofstra on Tuesday. One common opponent is Mt St Mary. We beat them by 50 our 1rst game and they beat them by 18 the very next game. Like our chances. Win that and we could host Georgetown with Yertseven back in Raleigh on the bench in street clothes. I assume Tuesday's game will be in Reynolds as the Canes has home game that evening.

Hereís the difference between RPI and NET. RPI rewards a team for playing in a weak conference and beating them up, and playing ó win or lose ó a slate of nationally ranked non-conference opponents. RPI doesnít reward a team for taking the nation's #1 team into overtime and losing barely if that is a conference game, and the NET does reward that. The mid-majors tweaked the RPI to give them their desired outcomes to the point that it became glaringly obvious. The NET was deliberately designed to correct those creeping inequities. Thatís how NC State could be barely above #100 in the RPI, but #33 in the NET. The ugly truth of selection politics is laid bare now.

Oh, thereís a lot here that fails to pass the siff check! Derreck and I were not seeking to diminish your concerns out of any sense of personal conflict, but just because of the many promises that the NCAA made about rejecting the RPI as a selection metric, and using only those referenced in Yowís blistering commentary. Those so referenced rankings do all take strength of schedule into account, but were designed to not elevate non-conference SoS so high as the last revised RPIís did. Had the NCAA not spent the time since August 2018 assuring the Power 5 conferences that this new system would be used, the Derreck and I both would have confirmed your concerns. Joe Lunardiís comments confirm what Iíve long suspected, that heís getting feedback from members of the selection committee (off the record) and so he knew they were going to use the RPI vice the NET and other rankings. Conferences work hard to put schedules together designed to get their teams in the NCAA Tournament. NC State did that, and people who reneged on made promises used different cirteria and are joined by a chorus of uninformed people who never knew about all those promises that the NCAA made. How outrageous?

Well, fact is your doubts were proven correct and the faith I put in the NCAA doing what they promised the Power 5 conferences that they would do was entirely misplaced. If coaches know what the goal line is, and they miss it, then thatís acceptable. But, the NCAA made promises that they did not keep. The NET did not ever show NC State as a bubble team. LSmith already showed why that was. The tyranny of the mid-majors remains even as a new selection standard was created to end this tyranny. ESPN kept saying there were slots lost by further upsets in conference tournaments. All that should have kept other teams out, not NC State! We were #32 in the NET, and the reasonable cut line for at large bids is #40. The truth is the goal line was published and the schedules built for it, and those on the committee chose to give the NCAA the middle finger. I feel very confident that hell will come from this!

Actually, it would be a great time for the ACC to boycott both the menís and womenís tournaments and work with the other major conferences to form two new basketball tournaments! The NET was designed to satisfy some major issues that the Power 5 conferences had with previous snubs using the abused RPI, and with the selection committee choosing to ignore that NET, the only thing left is for a revolt of the Power 5 conferences. I'm confident we will be selected because again the NET is the NCAA's new baby and the pressure to go with it will be extreme, as in, "You better use it if you ever want to sniff a spot on the selection committee again in your lifetime!" extreme! We are ranked #32 in the NET. Joe Lunardi again admits he isn't indexing his predicted field based on the NET and so I think he's going to have a few misses as a result. But, hey, on Sunday, we'll get to see if I eat crow! What concerns me is Braxton Beverly, who has had poor shooting efforts each of the last four games, including today. Going into this season, I thought that Beverly would be a major force for this team. As it is, we won more games than I ever thought we would with him playing below last season's production. I know he's a high character player, and so I'm confident he will stick with the team and work very hard on improving his shot in the off season. What we lacked sorely this year was a true post big man. Omer Yertseven was tailor made to be that kind of player, and he left. He also sat out this season. With the proven ability of Markell Johnson and Torin Dorn to drive and dish, Yertseven would have thrived on this roster this season. He also would have been the true interior presence to detour the kind of screens to allow guards to get layups in the paint against us. DJ Funderburk has been a better player than I expected to see from a true freshman. I think if he's willing to put in the work, and stay at least three years, he could gain the strength and polish to become an elite player. But, it takes time for big men to develop and he needs that time. Ken

To quote a once great coach named Herb, not HWSNBM, but another Herb who coached a pretty good team in 1980, "The legs feed the wolf". The legs did not feed the wolf in the 2nd half today. I will admit I will be sweating a little bit on Sunday. I would be sweating a lot more if we had lost to Clemson. It is what it is. I am most concern on seeing how Keatts builds this program and I believe he is on the right track. Regardless we will be playing at least one more game wherever that may be. There are at least 6 other ACC teams that will not be playing another game. Like I mentioned in the OP in this thread I will probably find out where our next game is nursing a hangover Monday morning and wherever that is and whichever tournament I will pull hard for the Pack.

The huge disparity between the NET and the RPI for NC State is the reason why the NCAA decided to abandon the RPI. Frankly, at this point, the mathematics used in the RPI render it useless as a predictive measure of postseason. The math used in the RPI was altered many times over the years, primarily to advantage mid-major schools in the NCAA selection process. The eyeball test tells me that the NET is a lot more accurate for the Pack than is the RPI. The obsession over non-conference SOS that the RPI uses actually punishes major conference teams by discounting their body of work within a conference loaded with elite teams. On the other hand, it rewards mid-major programs with a raft of cupcakes in their conference, by allowing them to schedule non-conference opponents who are stronger and beat a few. My thought is that it is a ridiculous concept that it matters more if you play the #1 team in the nation outside of conference vice inside your conference! NC State did beat Auburn and came real close to beating Wisconsin, two Dance teams. Plus, they beat Penn State, which is a quality team. It is just that the rest of their non-conference opponents were admittedly weak teams. Our quad one record is 3-8. Some use that to bash NC State, while I would respond to ask how many other teams played eleven games against quad one teams? Clemson may be the team most harmed by the desire of some to discount the strength of conference opponents. Clemson is a good team. No, not a great team, but a good team and certainly among the top 65 teams in the nation. But, to fairly earn an at large bid, you really have to be among the top 45 of teams, and Clemson may not quite be there. But, they came within a whisker of beating several teams that will be in the tournament field, and that means they are not far below them. Ken

Going undefeated to open the season has vaulted NC State to #2 in the national rankings. The Wolfpack is certainly on a drive as they continued that streak by beating George Mason 18-3. https://gopack.com/news/2019/3/13/baseball-no-2-pack9-runs-past-george-mason-to-stay-unbeaten.aspx The now 17-0 start is setting new records to start the season and now the team is staring at trying to match the 19 game winning streak record set back in 1990. Baseball is not a sport that lends itself to running off such a streak. The unpredictable nature of the sport tends to mitigate against dominion by pure talent. Up next, the Pack faces nationally ranked Florida State at home for their three-game series. If they can set a new record, they will certainly have to do it against an outstanding opponent.

Your logic would have been unimpeachable last year. However, the NCAA has adamantly said that this year the NET will be the primary objective measure by which at large bids will be assigned. Will those on the committee stab the NCAA in the back and go their own way and use the RPI? I doubt it simply because the NET was created by the NCAA and so I don't think the committee would give the NCAA a black eye like that. Joe Lunardi's bracket predictions are not using the NET, which even he admits could be a mistake. Clemson and NC State were in the 30's in the NET prior to today's game. That said, NC State should be higher than the last four in category based upon the NET. Clemson with this loss might well be among the last four in and play in the first round. Your other analysis on bracket busters is, of course, on the money. That is the remaining wild card, but likely one that would hurt Clemson. All that said, let's start the march now and beat Virginia! Ken

Our play in the first half was lifeless, allowing Clemson huge numbers of open breaks for easy points. Add that to lazy closing on open perimeter shooters and it contributed to a season best Clemson shooting effort from the three line. The result is a 42-26 halftime deficit for the Pack. A blowout loss in this game could render NC State out of the NCAA field simply because it would be two underperforming efforts in their last three games, and late season trends are taken into account. You have to show the selection committee that you are a hungry team looking to play hard. Ken
