NC State had the halftime lead against #8 Florida State, but the Noles went to the zone in the second half and pulled away to win 67-61.

That has been true. I would credit it to tougher competition as the season goes on. But, we tend to play good teams early. So, perhaps that's not the reason. But, you are right. Let's hope this year breaks that recent trend. Ken

It seems like we always start hot, at least the past several years, where we'll go undefeated until about 2 -3 weeks before the acc tourney, then we start dropping games. It's always nice to dominate, but I'd like to see that towards the end of the season, if I had a choice.

The #4 ranked NC State women's tennis team started the ACC regular season off right, beating #32 ranked Notre Dame 4-3. The win was also the 100th for coach Simon Earnshaw. https://gopack.com/news/2020/2/21/womens-tennis-earnshaw-notches-100th-win-at-nc-state-in-acc-opener-win.aspx It's been a remarkable situation for many NC State teams being nationally ranked, both swimming teams are in the top ten, wrestling is in the top ten, women's basketball is in the top ten, women's cross country finished ranked 5th nationally, and so are the men's and women's tennis teams ranked in the top ten. One can add the rifle team, baseball, and in their respective national rankings. We only have 21 teams in our athletic department, and I just listed seven in the top ten, and another two highly ranked just outside the top ten. Ken

It was a tough week for NC State. They lost their marquee home matchup against Lousiville, suffering their worst first period scoring of the season and never being able to recover from it, losing 66-59. Then, the hangover extended to their next home game versus Georgia Tech, losing that one 65-61. The momentum was regained at Miami, with the Pack winning 50-48. Still, the Pack's record is a gaudy 23-3 (12-3 ACC). Ken

I wonder if I could take Scott Wood to a crack plastic surgeon to change his facial features, sneak him in over the Mexican border with a bunch of false ID, and enroll him at NC State? Seriously, this NC State team is one crack sharpshooter away from being an elite team. It's just a matter of having one player on the perimeter who is Wood-like accurate from the three line. That's all it would have taken to take FSU out of that zone defense and then the rest of the team would have likely carried the day. We missed a number of quality open three point shot attempts in this game. I think we came close to forcing Hamilton out of that zone, but we just missed too many of those shots. Ken

Fortunately a lot of bubble teams lost today. FSU via beating us today moved up to a 2 seed according to Lunardi. He still has us as the last team in. Got to beat the Holes, Pitt, and Wake!!! Any loss in those 3 games barring a miracle win in Cameron and we need to make it to Friday and maybe even Saturday in the ACC tourney. That has been Pack basketball the past 30 years. Life on the bubble with the exception of most of Robinson's tenure and maybe 1 year under Herb and a couple of years under Gott when there was no suspense on selection Sunday.

Leonard Hamilton won this game for Florida State. He had the courage to go with the zone defense throughout the second half and it made the difference as our offense was unable to overcome it. I thought he might have gone back to their normal man-to-man scheme after Braxton Beverly hit his second three from the key, but he stayed with it, and he was right to do so. So, in the back-to-back games against top ten ranked opponents, we split, beating Duke and losing to FSU 67-61. We need to retain the focus and win three of these final four regular season games to like our post-season chances. But, we're in better position now that I honestly thought we would be after today. The #3 NC State Wolfpack has established an enviable regular season record, completing their matches against nationally ranked opponents. In dramatic comeback fashion, the Pack defeated Virginia Tech 21-18, spearheaded by Jarrett Trombley plus winning three of the last four bouts to overcome a 15-9 lead to win 21-18. https://gopack.com/news/2020/2/14/wrestling-trombley-pin-leads-3-packwrestle-to-21-18-win-over-7-virginia-tech.aspx With both teams firmly ranked in the top ten, there were lots of nationally ranked bouts. The marquee matchup featured #2 Hunter Bolen faced the Pack's #3 Trent Hidlay. Bolen defeated Hidlay 3-1 on a takedown. To put into perspective the strengths of these two teams, there were ten matches and eight of them featured nationally ranked opponents, while only one match featured both opponents unranked. The win improves NC State to 14-0, heading into the final regular season match at Duke.

I cannot overstate enough how we absolutely cannot, CANNOT afford a loss to UNC/Pitt/Wake, the 3 bottom teams with 13 conference wins combined between them. A loss to any of them erases the jump we just made. And I think we need those 3 and 1 more against FSU/Duke to be in the discussion. All 5 to have a good feeling about it. The 6 WTF losses to VT, UNC, BC, Clemson and GT are killing us.

All of the talking heads were saying we needed that signature win, which we got last night. With that win, we have 5 Q1 wins. That puts us tied for the most Q1 wins in the country.

Matt, Joe Lunardi has us listed now as the first four out. That hardly qualifies the next five games, including a home game versus # 8 Florida State, as really being "on the cusp of it not really mattering if we win or lose games." I understand you remark that for prior to the Duke game, but isn't it obviously true that if the Duke win puts us firmly on the bubble, that this game, plus the rest, matter a heck of a lot? Ken

I don't know if I should be thrilled for the guys or scratching my head at wondering where the hell THIS has been all year?? So I'll do both. Just as we're on the cusp of it not really mattering if we win or lose games, we hand Duke a beatdown for the ages. Play even half that good, consistently, and we waltz into the NCAA a 3 or 4 seed. We'd have at least 5 more wins right now. Maybe 6. Consistent inconsistency has been our trademark for nearly 30 years.

I very much want to believe you are right. But, last year the NCAA told everyone very publicly what their selection standards would be for the 2019 Dance, and by those standards, we were solidly in, not even on the bubble. But, we were passed over for four teams that were all below us on the NCAA's selection criteria. The selection committee drafted their own rules, and didn't bother telling anyone what those rules were. I know what they were -- they were about getting as many mid-majors in the Dance as possible without seeing the Power-5 telling the NCAA to pound sand and start their own national title tournament. The selection committee is always dominated by officials of the mid-major conferences and it's all about the money. If they thought they could have gotten one or two more mid-major teams in last year's tournament, without a Power 5 rebellion, then they would have done that. They want as much of the money as they can get, while not killing the goose laying the golden eggs. The NCAA can publicly state all the objective criteria they want to -- but I won't believe a word of it. The criteria is what I just said it is -- getting as many mid-major schools in the Dance without the Power-5 rebelling and freezing them completely out of whatever tournament night replace it. By that standard, NC State has to be significantly above those bubble mid-major teams.

As we have seen in the past, ACC standings dont matter. We may only get 4 teams in, but the 4th team could be the 5th place team. Yes we have bad loses, but we also have good wins. I believe we are 4-2 against Q1. But guess what, this year almost every team has bad losses. Also our non-conf SOS is 56 and overall SOS is 45. We are squarely on the bubble. A win over Duke or FSU and dont crap the bed the rest of the way we are in.

We have two Ls against them this year. ACC will probably only get 4 teams in. If there's a 5th, that team is going to have to show something in the ACC tournament. We have so many bad losses right now, I'm not sure a win over Duke AND FSU is enough without a moderate run in the tournament.

Stop personalizing this forum interaction. Believe me, I've faced vastly more significant issues in life than anything you create in this forum. In terms of being right, that's not the point. The point is obsessively being negative even when there are actually more things to be positive about. I've never in my life seen anything created from negativity, including business and sports, but most poignantly war fighting. No one wants to work for a doom and gloomer in life. As General Colin Powell well said as part of his key points of success, "Optimism is a force multiplier." Read on what George Washington did to turn defeat from losing New York into rebounding success at Trenton. Only a general who can see the positive opportunity in a situation is capable of achieving something like that. These are principles of leadership and team building success that are without question. They guide my life, and I frankly think you could benefit from letting them guide you, both in general life and interaction in this forum. Ken

Make or miss game. Had a wide open three opportunity that Johnson drove and dished back to the key. Had the shot gone in, we'd been up by two with 1:47 left to go -- sitting pretty for a third road win in a row. But, the shot clanked off the rim, and BC got the rebound and scored to push the lead to three. Overall, the lack of shooting acumen puts us in these situations. We actually shot 2-19 from the three arc in this game. Overall, we shot 27-62. That means we are much more effective inside the arc. But, teams are packing in their defenses and playing zone press on whomever has the ball on the perimeter. It's working much more often than not, and you can't win if you're giving up that many rebound opportunities on your shots. We outrebounded BC 35-32 and the turnovers were fairly even at 16-15. The glaring and singular difference is that BC shot 6-15 from the three arc and we shot just 2-19. The difference in my earlier stat report is they must have counted the wild 180 degree fall away shot late from CJ Bryce as a two attempt, vice a three attempt. Didn't matter, as it clanged also. That's 12 extra points for BC in a game they won by only three. Brutal truth is, we cannot shoot well, and without that option, we cannot consistently win. Ken

There's a bunch of stats you can point to and say "well, there you go." The one that really caught my eye was Markell Johnson, Senior PG, 4 pts, 6 turnovers. In a game we absolutely could not afford to lose. It's almost like he's point shaving. How does a 4th year senior on the watch list for ACC POY In November disappear like this?? Where's the leadership? We have NONE. I pushed the panic button on this team early after losing to a GT team we absolutely should not have lost to and several very unspectacular wins over total cream-puffs. It may have ruffled your feathers. But I was right.

For NC State, it was another case of being unable to shoot straight! The Pack went 2-20 from the three arc, and consequently, despite coming back to take a two point lead late in the game, was unable to control the play and lost that lead quickly and ended up losing at Boston College 71-68. BC was a sub .500 team coming into this game. For the Wolfpack, the situation is more dire. They are now 16-9 (7-7 ACC) and have only six games remaining in the regular season. Anything short of beating Florida State and Duke at home, and securing 21 wins heading into the ACC tournament, will not get it done for this team. Frankly, anything short of a miracle run in the ACC tournament will leave the Pack playing their way to an early golf date. I don't see this team able to beat Duke and FSU. Ken

If this deal involves a post season ban I hope we can go ahead and take it this season because at best I think we are looking at another NIT bid. And the NIT bid depends on if we can win a couple of games in this brutal 6 game closing stretch with 2 game against #7 Duke and one against #8 FSU. Let the NCAA go ahead and kick us when we are down and we are really down right now with the loss tonight.

It was hinted at with an unexplained photo several months ago, but made official today. The NHL has announced that on 20 Feb 2021, the Hurricanes will host an outdoor hockey match at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Colorado Avalanche hosted an outdoor game this year at the Air Force Academy's Falcon's Stadium, but the situation became horrible due to impossible traffic conditions. The AFA campus is situated in a remote area, and so NC State's football stadium won't have the same traffic issues. https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2020/02/15/carolina-hurricanes-host-2021-stadium-series-carter-finley-stadium-outdoor-game/ It has been stated that the seating configuration at CF will make for an ideal situation. The seats are closer to the field than many collegiate stadiums, and so even though the hockey ice will only take up a small portion of the field, the sight lines should be outstanding. A certain number of field level seats could also be added until they reached the same level of the normal stadium seats, which sit about 15 feet off the ground. Ken

The NCAA has replied to NC State's initial response. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28674688/in-reply-nc-state-ncaa-lays-evidence-40000-payment Long and short of it is that there is significant evidence that Orlando Early communicated repeatedly with Tony Gassnola on the day he withdrew $40,000 from his bank account and flew to Raleigh. In addition, Bobby Lutz, then an assistant coach on Mark Gottfried's staff, has told the NCAA that he observed Gassnola meet with both Gottfried and Early at the team's practice facility immediately before the national signing day. For those who may not recall, there was a period of time just prior to the NLOI period, where reports were that Dennis Smith was softening his decision on signing with NC State. Then, the signing took place, with a strange lack of information of why things suddenly took a reversal and then counter-correction. Early also has decided not to cooperate with the NCAA investigation, choosing not to reply to the allegations nor to meet with the investigators. Per three NCAA rules when a subject of an NCAA investigation chooses to avoid responding to the notice of investigation, or refuses to sit down with investigators for the desired interview, then the NCAA is authorized to consider the lack of response by Early to be an admission of his guilt. The gist of NC State's defense is that while evidence exists that Early accepted the $40,000, the school maintains that Early never passed the money along. Frankly, if that were the case, then Early would be a fool not to have cooperated with the NCAA's investigation. One can reasonably surmise that Early did not destroy the money, so if it was not passed to Smith's trainer Shawn Farmer, who was then supposed to hand it over to Smith's family, then where is that money? People don't just lose $40,000. Moreover, between October 30th and November 1st, the NCAA has discovered proof of multiple text and phone calls between Early and Gassnola, as well as between Early and Farmer. Combined with Lutz's revelation of seeing Gassnola meet with both Gottfried and Early, it appears that the NCAA has a very solid case.

But, this was a very difficult stretch of schedule, with three straight road games, and the Pack has won two of them back-to-back, with one left to go at BC! This win secures fifth place for the Pack, via the head-to-head being won by NC State, breaking the log jam with Syracuse. The Pack's record is now 16-8 (7-6 ACC). Indeed, very nice to see happen. Popolizio has built a truly elite program. He came to NC State with an outstanding reputation, and he's only exceeded it so far. Wrestling programs only schedule about 15 matches in a regular season, and so for a single team to play three straight matches against top ten ranked teams is an extraordinary situation. Moreover, for a single team to schedule five nationally ranked opponents in that regular season represents a third of your entire schedule. It's like a basketball team playing ten nationally ranked opponents in a season, and playing over half the national top ten teams among them! I don't know of any basketball team doing anything like that, but Popolizio's team is, and so far, they are 4-0 against those ranked opponents! Ken

I saw where Reynolds was packed for this match. Great to see the fan support for the wrestling team.

It was a clash of national wrestling titans, as #3 ranked NC State hosted #8 UNC. The match's outcome came down to the final bout between heavyweights as Deonte Wilson defeated UNC's Andrew Gunning on a take down. That sealed the results, with NC State winning 19-14. This marked seven straight wins over UNC, a school record. The biggest tilt was between #2 Hayden Hidlay, who defeated #15 AC Headlee. The lone upset was unranked Brandon Whitman beating #20 Nick Reenan, to allow UNC to tie the event prior to the deciding heavyweight match. https://gopack.com/news/2020/2/7/wrestling-walk-off-win-as-3-packwrestle-scores-19-14-win-over-8-unc.aspx The win advanced NC State to 13-0 on the season. The Wolfpack has beaten four nationally ranked opponents so far this year, starting with #15 Cornell, then #12 Princeton, and then back to back against #10 Pitt and #8 UNC. Up next, NC State completes their competition against nationally ranked teams by hosting #7 Virginia Tech. Ken
