The "no harm" argument is all the defense has in this case, but it is a very weak effort. The basis of law is the action, not the outcome. The no harm angle is mostly played when the criminals get cold feet and decided to abandon their plans before carrying out their crime. In this case, the action was the coordination and provision of money, especially the coordination by interstate means, which made it a federal crime. Once money changes hands, especially when it winds up in the hands of the person intended, and the payment itself violates law, then the crime has happened. Like it or not, there are numerous laws in place that makes it a crime for someone to pay a student-athlete outside the contract signed between the school and the player. The actions of Adidas executives, AAU coaches, agents, players and college coaches, in this case itself, has shown why those laws were adopted. Once the link was drawn with an assistant coach at NC State and this payment scheme, then I came to the conclusion that we will almost certainly face NCAA sanctions. The level of cooperation and post-event actions by NC State should shield us from severe sanctions. We fired the entire coaching staff of Gottfried and reported everything we knew to the feds and the NCAA. This investigation is precisely why I am shocked that Gottfried was immediately hired to be head coach at another school. Ken

I've been somewhat following this ordeal and it appears one of the defenses main arguments is no harm. It seems to me if State (or any other school) has any penalties (vacating wins, etc.), a class action suit should be brought on behalf of the boosters. We provide money for these sports and harm is done to us when we are penalized for these transgressions.

Not sure how many are you aware, but NC State has themselves a pretty good hockey team: http://www.ncsuhockey.org/ They are undefeated heading into a pretty busy weekend. Monday, they will be playing the Holes at PNC --- the organizers are seeking a $5 donation for entry. Concessions will be open as well as the ability to purchase BEERS! Woot-Woot. I am looking forward to going -- seeing the Pack play in the same arena as the Canes.

Our secondary has defiantly been better than expected. I agree that Ingle will get better as he is a freshman. But at this point he is the weak link in pass coverage and we need to get pressure to help protect him.

Pittsburgh is at #6 Notre Dame and it trying to continue their streak of being giant killers! Midway in third quarter, they are leading the Irish 14-6, and just snuffed out a rare quality drive with an interception. They could have added to their lead, but missed a moderately long field goal attempt. Last season, Pitt beat #2 Miami 24-14 at home finale, to earn only their fifth win of the season. The season before, they shocked then #2 Clemson on the road. Pitt has never been consistent in these three seasons, but they seem to be that team that can benefit from a highly ranked team looking past them. In 2017, Miami was enroute to an undefeated regular season and had clinched the Coastal Division and a matchup with Clemson for the conference title. That stumble at home was the first of three straight losses for the Hurricanes, costing Miami the chance at the national championship playoff bowl, then the conference, and even finally their Orange Bowl matchup against Wisconsin. Clemson in 2016 was much the same story in that the Tigers were undefeated at the time. The difference is that this was their sole defeat on their way to winning the 2016 National Championship title. That was the year that Kyle Bambard shanked a chip shot field goal that should have earned NC State the road win over Clemson. Clemson survived that game in overtime just three weeks before their loss to Pitt.

I think our secondary has been better than expected, and for the most part have tackled well. Offenses are going to complete passes, but limiting YAC and preventing third down conversions is critical. A lot of the scrutiny for Ingle's coverage is deserved. That being said, some of those long pass plays came from having lack of safety support over the top. Perhaps they move to Griffin in obvious passing downs . One thing to keep in mind -- Ingle is a true freshman. He will improve. Additionally, the Nickle in our defense is a hybrid LB-DB. That has to be an incredibly challenging position to learn.

The single most important key is to get consistent pressure on that Clemson quarterback, and get him nervous. Handing the ball off will be how Clemson tries to contain that pressure. But, if we can do that one thing, then I like our chances. Because if you beat the other team's quarterback in the college game, then you give yourself a huge advantage, much more so than in the pro game. Ken

It's notable that we had a 100 yard rusher for the 2nd week in a row. Against Marshall Ricky Person went over the century mark and was only 8 yards from reaching that mark against BC. Reggie Gallaspy got over 100 against BC. I know that defending the run is BC's weakness this year, but progress in that area was sorely needed from the Pack. They're definitely trending in the right direction as they go into preparation for Clemson.

Well, most everyone expected this to be the matchup that will determine who wins the Atlantic Division. This year is a bit different in that the Coastal has a strong Miami team leading it. But, there are only three ranked ACC teams and two of them are Clemson and NC State. Death Valley will not intimidate this team. I didn't two years ago and it won't this year either. There is a sense within Wolfpack Nation that NC State can beat Clemson. But, it has to be done on the field. Dabo's tinkering with stuff not broke may have provided an opening for the Wolfpack. He still has an outstanding running back to rely upon to balance his offense, but if the Pack can control the Clemson running game, then I like our chances. Clemson's defense hasn't matched up against a team with an array of well above average receivers to go with a pinpoint passing quarterback. Clearly, the offensive line's challenge will be to maintain the passing pocket for Finley. Our running game appears to be on the right track at just the right time, as we will need to keep their defensive line and linebackers honest. Clemson has the best combination of depth and talent in the conference. I expect a hard fought game where either side will have an opportunity to win. Ken

Iím going to say this, State wins in two weeks at Clemson. There are some parallels that have nothing to do with the upcoming game but are just too interesting not to bring up. First, the last time State went to Death Valley with an unbeaten, ranked team was in 2002. Phillips Rivers was QB and TA McLendon was running back. State Won 38-6. What are the Parallels? Funny you should ask. First thereís no denying that Finley is the best QB in the ACC this year (much like Rivers was in Ď02) and TA had emerged as a ligit threat at RB. Kinda coincidental that Person is a freshman and has emerged as the heir-apparent to Hines. Also, the receiving corps was pretty good then and this years receining corps is great. Also the defense that year was quietly a good for the Pack. Holt and Burnette were our biggest names, but that doesnít mean the defense didnít have some up and coming talent, Pat Thomas, Manny Lawson were some of the guys that I remember played. Our Defense has guys like Roseboro, Pratt and Bryant that we know of but the rest are making a name for themselves. Iíll say that this means nothing in regards to the game in 2 weeks. So why do I feel that we win? Letís look at QBís. Finley is better than Lawrence even with the hiccups he had last week. Gallaspy and Person are as capable as Clemsonís RBís. Iíll say that our receivers are every bit as good as theirís. Clemsonís defense may be more talented but Stateís is no slouch. Where theyíre better is at special teams and thatís not even close. Doeren and co. will have to figure that out over the next two weeks. State canít depend on special teams to win the game they just donít have to cost it for them either. Lastly. This isnít a pie in sky, State has to play perfect game to win. They do need to bring their best donít beat yourselves performance on the 20th to win. Clemson has been playing with fire against State. If Indewood hasnít been ruled out of bounds that game mightíve turned out differently. If Bambard couldíve made a chip shot FG and if Hines wouldíve been healthy, these games mightíve turned out in Stateís favor. This year the breaks go our way and the Wolfpack wins.

I am looking forward to seeing what Drink has up his sleeve for Clem's son... After watching A&M's WRs abuse the Clemson DBs, Finley & Co could very well have a field day. The Tiggers have had a change of identity since going with Lawrence -- while he is passing the ball very well, they have become a run-first team during their Syracuse and WF outings. Defensively, I think the Pack needs to introduce Lawrence to our grown ass DL and LBs early and often. He's frail. Limit the potent rushing attack -- our D needs to get off the field.

Exactly my thoughts. We should have easily had two more TD's in the first half alone. This game was a blowout everywhere except the scoreboard. This was the South Carolina game all over, except we found a way to win. That is what great teams do. I did not like taking our foot off the gas offensively midway through the 3rd quarter but I understand the thought process. I felt like we were still trying to not show our hand. So far through 5 weeks we have won without really opening up the play book. Game ball, defense. The defense was big time Saturday. While we have less "talent" we are a better overall defense than last year. Honorable mention, Coach Drink. The huge play call to get the final first down to seal the win. Everyone was expecting to keep it on the ground. That was gutsy. I do believe this was our WTF game for the year. We just dont usually play this fast and loose with the ball. We will learn and move forward. Up next the Bye week!

Despite the miscues al over the place, State pulled this one out. There can be no doubt that we left points on the field associated with the interceptions, fumble and special teams being, well, special (not in a good way). The defense played great IMO, you have to figure that had State not fumbled, thrown those interceptions and had the special team faux pas, State could've easily scored 41 points to maybe 10-17 of BC. Sometimes good teams find a way to win despite the mistakes made and I for one am glad that they did this time. On to Clemson.

The first half was amazing. The second half has been incredible. Turnovers are how a great team can turn itself into a bad team. Depending upon how one counts, right now, the Pack has turned the ball over six times. Two interceptions, two fumbles, a blocked field goal attempt, and a blocked punt that BC recovered in the end zone for a touchdown! The only special teams play we executed well when necessary was the successful reception of the onsides kick off after BC pulled it to within 28-23 with 3:35 left in the game. That blocked punt and TD prior to this was a game-changer, and made it truly possible for BC to win a game they had no other business even being close in. In the second half, the offense did just barely enough to survive all the myriad of mistakes, and the defense was the positive story of this game in both halves. Six huge turnovers and we survived because the defense played outstanding. If there had been a seventh turnover (primarily failure to defend against the onsides kick), then I think we would have shockingly lost this football game, despite a statistical domination of every aspect of the game except the turnover battle. And, in that regard, Germaine Pratt's strip fumble from the scrum is the winning play of this game. I don't think I have ever seen a team win a football game when turning over the ball six times to one. As it is, we beat a good BC team 28-23, and have a bye week to ready up for the all-important road game at Clemson. Box score: http://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore?gameId=401013139

Really amazing first half. We made three mistakes turning the ball over and the defense bailed us out every single time, surrendering just a field goal, which was a true win for the defense considering where we turned it over on a muffed punt return. Yet, despite those mistakes, normally a killer, we go to the locker room up 21-3. Boston College's world class running back, A.J. Dillon, did not make the trip. That's seemed to take the wind out of the Eagle's offense so far at least. We've gotten a bit lucky as open receivers were either missed or dropped passes. When the offense did not turn over the ball, it clicked like clockwork. Ken
