    Default 2018 NCAA Championships

The Wolfpack had their highest finish in program history at the 2018 NCAA National Championships, finishing fourth in the nation!

Moreover, 197 pound class wrestler Michael Macchiavello won the national title!

The Wolfpack entered the tournament as the fourth ranked team in the country and had four wrestlers earn All-American honors:

    Macciavello
(Freshman) Hayden Hidlay (finished second to Penn State's Jason Nolf)
    (Freshman) Tariq Wilson (finished third)
    (Senior) Kevin Jack (finished sixth)

By finishing fourth in the national field, the Pack brings home a team trophy to go with Macciavello's individual hardware. The team national trophy is the first ever for NC State, and ties as the highest ever national finish for any ACC school, cementing the achievements of head coach Pat Popolizio, who has built NC State into a national powerhouse program.

Yep. They're turning me into a wrestling fan. I caught several of the matches this season and watched the finals on Saturday evening. I wasn't sure that there was anyone who could beat Hayden Hidley, who went into the finals match undefeated on the season, but fell to the returning national champion from Penn State. Good thing is HE'S ONLY A FRESHMAN!!

Another freshman Tariq Wilson started the tournament unseeded, but finished 3rd in his weight class.

Mike Machievello was a beast, finishing off his career by beating ACC rival from VT, taking home the national championship.

The Pack was right at home with the Big 10 schools who dominate the sport. They earned a great deal of respect as a national program. They even picked up a commitment from a big time high school wrestler from Texas over the weekend. This program is going no where but up.

Other than the early exit of the basketball team on Thursday this was a great Wolfpack weekend.
