    Default ACC Tournament

NC State earned significant benefit from winning the UNC road series to close out the regular season. There was a logjam for the third seed heading into the tournament, but the Pack earned sole possession of that spot on Sunday.

The Pack's pool will include Florida State and Wake Forest. The Pack will enjoy the top seed in that bracket pool, which in the tournament format is a huge benefit.

Louisville ran away with the conference top spot, and Georgia Tech took a one game advantage to earn the second seed.

Right now, the ACC is solid to get five teams in the NCAA Regionals, with Louisville, Georgia Tech, and NC State likely to host. Florida State is on the bubble to get in the field, as is Clemson. Depending upon the poll, going into the UNC road series, the Wolfpack was ranked #13 to #14. After beating #15 UNC, the Pack will likely move up a few spots to end the regular season just outside the top ten.

Games start today. with the lower seeded teams battling first. Tuesday's slate of games are:

Boston College vs Clemson at 11:00

Wake Forest vs Florida State at 15:00

Notre Dame vs Duke at 19:00

For NC State, the seeding in Pool C is so important. If Wake Forest beats FSU, and then on Thursday NC State opens play and beats Wake, then the Pack advances to the semi-finals by virtue of seed-dependent tie-breaking. The Friday game against FSU would then not matter. If Wake beats both FSU and NC State, then they advance to the semi-finals. If FSU beats Wake today, then the winner of Friday's game advances to the semi-finals regardless of the Thursday game between Wake and NC State!

The advantages for the top seed team are significant, primarily in knowing ahead of time what they need to do. If Wake wins today, the Pack knows it needs to go with its best pitchers to win the game. If Wake loses, then the Pack knows it should keep their powder dry for Friday.

BC beat Clemson to open up play. An upset in the first game, and likely a death blow to Clemson’s NCAA aspirations!

Wake upset FSU 7-4, which means Thursday’s game between Wake and NC State is a winner-take-pool affair. If Wake wins they advance undefeated in pool play. If the Pack wins, then they advance via a three-way tie even if FSU beats NC State on Friday.

NC State breaks Wake’s heart, storming back from 4-0 down to win 6-5 and advance to the semi-finals!

After leaving a small army of ten men on base, the Pack finally scored two to make it 4-2 Wake in the seventh inning. But, Wake tallied one back in their bottom half of that frame. With the score 5-2 going to the top of the ninth, the Wolfpack stormed back to score four to take the lead after a lengthy review of a call out at the plate was overturned to plate the go ahead run.

Wake started the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff double, but could only advance to third before the final out was recorded on a strikeout.

The Pack plays FSU in a meaningless game as far as the tournament brackets are concerned.

Write up from the thrilling game:

    http://theacc.com/news/2019/5/23/bas...n-deacons.aspx

The result has likely ended Wake's season as they needed to win this one to have any chance at an at-large tournament bid. The win for NC State further solidifies their chances to host a regional, though going into the game the RPI had NC State ranked #14. There are so many polls for college baseball, that one never really knows about these things.

Again, even though the Friday game with Florida State is meaningless for the ACC Tournament, it could further assist NC State's NCAA seeding. FSU on the other hand will desperately want to win to keep their flickering NCAA bid chances alive.

For the Pack, the meaningful game will be Saturday versus the winner of Friday's Duke versus Georgia Tech game.

By losing to FSU followed by Georgia Tech, and likely the manner of getting soundly beaten by both, the Wolfpack saw its RPI drop from #14 to #17 and thereby lost out on hosting a regional for the second season in a row.

By beating Georgia Tech soundly to win the conference title, UNC also vaulted their RPI to #14, and will host a regional. Effectively, NC State and UNC swapped spots in the RPI.

Honestly, I have no beef with any of this. The Wolfpack did not play well enough late in the season to earn a regional hosting.

My only beef is the meaningless game against FSU in the ACC tournament. Yea we got our ass handed to us conserving pitchers for the weekend but the game sent us into a downward spiral after finishing the season hot by destroying the "holes" (eventual ACC Champs) 22-2 in 2 games and then the come from behind win against WF the 1rst game of the tournament. Conference Tournaments should not have meaningless games!!! Got to do away with pool play!!! I understand the reason for not having the double elimination format to conserve pitchers but at least have single elimination like the ACC basketball tournament. Pool play serves its purpose in the little league world series so Moms can watch their little darlings play at least 3 games.

And really what is wrong with a single elimination format in baseball. The conference champs will generally only play 3 games unless there are some major upsets but at the most 5 games. The "holes" played 4 games this weekend to clinch the title.
