    Default MLB draft

Will Wilson was selected in the first round (#15 overall) by the Los Angeles Angels. At NC State, he was our shortstop and earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-ACC selection. He was also selected second team All-American, and a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award for college baseball's best shortstop.

Evan Edwards was selected in the fourth round by the Miami Marlins. He was NC State's first baseman in 2019. In many respects he was our best offensive player, leading the team in RBI's (60), walks (51), on base percentage (.455). He was second on the team in batting average (.330), runs (59), hits (76), doubles (17), homers (14), bases (139) and slugging percentage (.604). Defensively, he was among the best first basemen in college baseball, starting every game of the year without committing a single error!

    Congrats to both!

Day three saw six more NC State players selected in the 2019 MLB draft:

16th round (474 overall) Pitcher Jason Parker, Cincinnati Reds

17th round (517 overall) Pitcher Alec Barger, Atlanta Braves

21st round (631 overall) Pitcher Andrew Blake, Los Angeles Angels

24th round (712 overall) Pitcher Michael Beinlein, Detroit Tigers

33rd round (1007 overall) Outfielder Thayer Thomas, Boston Red Sox

39th round (1161 overall) Pitcher Evan Justice, Miami Marlins

Given that Thomas still has three years remaining on his football scholarship, and will see significant starting time as a red shirt sophomore at wide receiver in 2019-20, I doubt that he will sign a baseball pro contract.

Now the not so good news! The Pack had a few of its recruiting signees also get drafted:

Blake Walston, LHP (1st round, 26 overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks

Andy Samuelson, LHP (12th round, 367 overall) by the Atlanta Braves

Noah Soles, OF (19th round, 572 overall) also by the Diamondbacks

Jose Torres, SS (24th round, 733 overall) Milwaukee Brewers

One can never tell about these things, but the odds are quite high that Walston will sign a pro contract since he would be guaranteed first round slot money. Obviously, that is a significant blow to the Wolfpack's 2020 recruiting class. I would guess that both Soles and Torres would decline their MLB team's contract offers and instead play at NC State. Samuelson is a JUCO transfer, and his draft position is in that 50-50 range on whether he chooses the Braves or the Wolfpack.
