    Default NCAA Outdoor Championships

The Wolfpack team placed in five competitions in the NCAA Championships this season:

    Triple Jump (Jamar Davis)
    Men's 5000 meter (Ian Shanklin)
Women's 3,000 meter steeplechase (Nell Crosby)
Men's 100 meter dash (Cravont Charleston)
Men's 4x100 meter relay (Junpai Dowdy, Cravont Charleston, Shannon Patterson, Quashawn Cunningham)

The men's dash events all concluded on Wednesday. The relay team did not finish the race, for reasons unstated. The team's best time was recorded in the east regionals at 39.17 seconds. Had they matched that time in the national championships, it would have tied Iowa for a top ten finish, but not moved them on to the finals.

Charleston finished 14th in the individual men's 100m dash, and consequently earned second team All-American honors.

The next event (steeplechase) is scheduled for Thursday.

The womens' 3000 meter steeplechase just concluded and NC State's Nell Crosby finished in fifth place in the preliminary race and thereby qualified for the finals. She ran in the first of two prelims.

Update: the results of the second prelim placed Crosby in 11th and still racing in the finals.

Jamar Davis placed 23rd in a field of 24 in the triple jump today.

The men's 5000 meter is running as I am typing this.

Ian Shanklin finished eleventh in the field of 24 runners. He will earn first team All-American honors for this result due to the fact that he placed in the top eight of American citizens in the event. Four of the runners who finished ahead of Shanklin are foreign citizens, who will also be named first team All-Americans, but the rules are that the list extends to cover all of the top eight American citizen finishers.

So, congratulations to Ian Shanklin! First Team All-American!

Nell Crosby has the distinction of being the final NC State athlete to compete in the 2018-19 season! By earning her way to the NCAA Championship Finals in the 3000 meter steeplechase, she certainly ensured it was a very positive coda to the year. In fact, so positive that she earned her spot in the finals by posting a new NC State school record in the semi-finals!

However, her path ended with a last place finish of 12th in the finals. She barely missed out of a first team All-American finish to her college career also. The top eight American finishers in an event are named to the first team All-American list, but she finished ninth among American citizens in the event. Of course, she did solidly earn second team selection.

Two other achievements earn special mention.

Boise State's Allie Ostrander earned her third straight 3000 meter steeplechase National Championship title! Also, BYU's Erica Birk earned All-American honors by finishing the race in fifth place only 18 months after giving birth to her son!
